I am good with compootah
But I suck at setting up internet and always have. Hate networking.
I moved from London to Bejing half a year ago and live in a communistic apartment with communistic style internet. This is how it is: Cat5 from computer into wall socket...that's it!
Can't see a router or modem as its inside the wall with me able to see it through what is essentially a cage behind a metal panel. Can't install Tomato or any alternative firmware.
My speed is limited by the management and phone company - this is non negotiable. Imagine 125 kbps download and 22 kbps upload (real figures).
Question is this: Back in England I lived in a fairly large sized house with very very thick walls and the house had one wireless/modem Netgear router. One computer next to the router was connected to it by ethernet, 1 by wireless, 1 by wall plugged ethernet bridge (the wall socket thing) and a xbox by another wall socket ethernet bridge (all separate rooms).
So what the hell is the point of wireless internet if you always need cables in a home?
The one computer that had no ethernet connected to it always had sucky internet speeds.
Another question: YOUR HOME - do you have a wireless router along with modem (of course) next to each computer (if more than 1 and with large distances in between)?
This looks very elementary but I have never been able to get my head around this setup logistically.
Or is one router enough and you all use ethernet cables with the wall socket electrical plug things?

For me this seems too mundane and stupid to go into hardware forum.
Thanks.
