Doctors urge ban on smoking in cars

The day they stop me smoking in my car is the day it drives into the bull**** community police station near me. It would be awesome.

It isn't any more dangerous than half the other stuff you can do in your car.

I am not harming anyone with smoke unless they are next to my window. Are we going to ban car exhausts as well, if you stand next to that it isn't exactly pleasant. Either way, let me do it with my window up, this is akin to banning it in your own home.

Fat people do cause visual pollution, it damages my mental health whenever I see a fat person in tight cloths.

It could kill me. Smoking can cause cancer. If you smoke you don't automatically get it.

Let me start by saying that I am truly sorry about that. My thoughts are with you, your friend and your friends family.

Thank you - I appreciate it.

Thing is I am a very considerate smoker, I dont drop my fag butts on the floor and I only smoke in designated areas.
Which on my part shows that I do have self control. I do not smoke around people that dont smoke.

Granted - do you ever smoke whilst walking down the road? Do you have an awareness that on any given day everything that a smoker exhales drifts down the road either in the direction of the prevailing wind or behind them? There are people in my office block who smoke in the designated area, unfortunately my office being on the 4th floor and the shape of the buildings open area being like a large chimney it call comes straight up and into my office window. I have mentioned this to the building manager (who is also a smoker) and gotten an extremely non committal response - i.e. don't open your window.

You might be the most conscientious smoker on the face of the planet but you can only speak for yourself - not for the vast majority of people that I come across that happily smoke where-ever they legally please and leave their butts all over the ground.

This could be reversed very easily.

You drink and therefore I hold you in contempt, I have seen the damage that alcohol can cause and I have also had to do cpr on a child that had no ribs because of an rta due to a drunk driver.

So I also hold you in contempt because you drink, regardless of the fact that you may well be a responsible drinker.

That is horrible and I feel for you having to deal with that - last Saturday I had to help a drunken bum who had sconned his head on something - blood all over the place - to get an ambulance. I too hold them in contempt, as did the ambulance people who said - "Ah "so and so", he's a regular".

However I would have to bring up a couple of points - in moderation alcohol does not have long term damage to your health especially when combined with a healthy active lifestyle. In excess it is in many ways worse than cigarettes as smoking doesn't cause the horrific road accidents that occur every day, no does it cause people to loose self control and beat their spouses or children. Alcoholism is as much a bane on society as smoking, if not more and I firmly believe that it too should be tackled. There are clearly many people out there who either way don't have the self control or self respect to be able to operate within society when given the availability of these substances.

Now, I know it is hard, but try to take emotion out of it.

The thing is when you take the emotion out of it, you're left with the facts - in no way at any time in any place do the fact leave ANY support for smoking. In a purely factual situation smoking is an intensely illogical thing to be doing. Smokers are burning chemical soaked tobacco leaf and inhaling some 4000 resulting chemicals of which 50 are known to be carcinogens.

I am very considerate when it comes to smoking. Ultimately it is my choice to smoke. As it is legal I am doing nothing wrong. If I do not let other people breath in my smoke whilst driving then how am I harming others?

Sure - fair call - but you are harming yourself. Is that not an issue?

Smoking while driving is just as bad as it is to use a mobile phone while driving.

IT SHOULD BE BANNED

without a dout it will be soon anyway.

I'm not sure it's a fair call to say it's similar to using mobile phones - Using a mobile actually distracts you from your job of driving as well as causing a blind spot when you're holding it to your ear. Smoking does none of those things.

It should be banned full stop - not just whilst driving. The point behind the driving whilst smoking thing is due to the enclosed nature of a car and the adverse effect it has on both the drive and occupants.

Have you tried smoking and driving at the same time? It's really hard! Juggling a small fire and motorway speeds is dangerous!

The Royal College of Physicians recommend a lot of things that can't really be brought into law.

I wonder what the correlation is between people that support the smoking ban and people that support the guns ban.

I hate having uncessary legislation, but i feel the handgun ban in 1997 was not the worst thing to happen, although the 1986 ban was a farce.

If you need a handgun, you can still get one iirc a man argued he needed one to finish deer off humainly when deer stalking and was granted a license.

On the other hand, it hasn't curbed anything, so i guess the 1997 ban was a waste of time as well.

Guys, guys!
Getting lightheaded after a fag is wierd but having road rage after an hour isn't?

I have a system, if someone does something which is annoying, instead of reacting to these inconsiderate ********* who don't deserve a licence. I'll light up a fag instead. In most cases it'll stop me reacting, putting myself and others in danger excecuting dangerous manouvers and such.

Some people in this thread are very opinionated about smoking it seems. Fair play to them. However, if someone smokes, it is their choice.

My parents smoked around me and I smoke as well. I have not been harmed in anyway and neither have my parents. My mum smoked from the age of 15 to 55. She was on 40 a day, every day and guess what? She's absolutely fine (health wise).

If people want to smoke, let them. It's their choice and their freedom. I do not believe we should ban things like smoking, drinking etc, as that infringes on a person's freedom.

We're going to die anyway, why not die doing something you enjoy?

I agree, if someone wants to kill themselves, let them, but what about their kids in the car that don't get a choice?

Well, actually, you probably have been harmed, as you are twice as likely to smoke if your parents smoke.

My mum smoked from the age of 15 to 55. She was on 40 a day, every day and guess what? She's absolutely fine (health wise).

My sister is a dentist and saw a man yesterday with throat cancer and pancreatic cancer. He was 47.

This seems to be the usual way that smokers deflect the real issue - and it is a truly poor argument. It's like saying "yeh, i've drunk driven loads of times before - and i'm not dead, so i guess it must be safe".

We're going to die anyway, why not die doing something you enjoy?

Ah, another gem, taken directly from the "Smokers Handbook of How to Deflect". If you really thought that, then why aren't you out sleeping with hookers and treating yourself to some heroin every night?

Because, funnily enough, I don't like heroin and I have a loving girlfriend. I honestly believe we're on this earth to just live. I choose to live by doing what I enjoy, which happens to be smoking, gaming and a certain smoked substance whilst gaming. So what? It's my life, I can do whatever the hell I want with it.

I believe in personal freedom. Obviously, people can't go around killing others, stealing etc, but for the legal things, I don't give a damn what other people think. Again, it's my choice.

I'm not deflecting any issues. As for you saying about the dentist, I realise people get ill and die from smoking, but other people don't. Just like from everything else.

You drive, you can die. You drink, you can die. You swim, you can die. It doesn't matter what you do, there's always a chance of dying.

Good retort Gaygle.....firm and fair.
Smokers always show their selfish side when they say "its our choice, let us smoke". They always 'forget' that others breathe in their filth!

if the guy next to me decide to shoot up (not condoning this at all btw), then it doesn't affect me.
If he lights up, i'll be coughing with watery eyes within minutes. Selfish ******.

So what? It's enough that I have to put up with everyone else in this life. There are certain people I associate myself with, the others...who cares?

My family and friends are all I care for.

Ah so we get to the crux of it - you just don't care if you're harming other people... you're a prime example of why it should be banned. If you really cared about your family and friends you wouldn't smoke around them.

Pfft, my entire family smokes and all my friends do. They make me happy and I make them happy. They don't care if I harm them, they live the way they want to, just like I do. Just like everybody should do.

I don't believe in changing myself just because someone doesn't like something about me.

Yup, without wanting to jump on the bandwagon; Azrael maybe you are a minority in the way you think. You just also happen to be a smoker.
Either way, your attitude stinks imho. Not that you'd care.....we already know that.
