Las Vegas - general pre-booking advice

One of the guys is contemplating a visit to the Grand Canyon, but I'm not sure if it'll just be a massive expensive tourist trap despite it's natural epic-ness.

The natural epicness was indeed epic.

We went for a drive out to the Grand Canyon while we were in Las Vegas in 2003. Don't know if much has changed since then, but the only expense we incurred in visiting the Canyon was the fuel to drive out there. It was a few hours drive each way (though not a lot in the big picture)... and we found a traffic jam in the middle of nowhere!

We did get to watch an awesome thunderstorm over the Canyon though.

When i was in vegas we went to the west rim, and wasnt geand at all :( pretty gutted in fact, as i dont see me getting back out there anytime soon either. hey-ho. Do the south rim.

unfortunately this happens to many folks, it does border on a scam by the tour companies

Sorry for jumping in here but thought it would be better to post here than start another thread. We're off to Vegas next month and I just have a question about money. Is it better to take Travellers Cheques or just plain cash? Been to Orlando before and using TCs was easy as every place just accepts them like cash and we didn't have to take our passports or id. Also heard about pre-paid cards that you can load with money, are they another option?

Combination of cash and a no fee credit card such as the post office one is the way to go when abroad these days, in my opinion.

When we went, we never bothered with TCs. Changed ~£200 into USD at Heathrow, and then just drew more as we needed it from cash machines. Most stuff got paid for on a card.

Just came back from Vegas - stayed at the Encore at Wynn - its the north side of the strip which actually worked out nice as away from hustle and bustle. Was on a Stag Do so was only in the Hotel to sleep/relax by pool so good to have a break from the constant partying...

Was very nice - pools was great - XS was better ;)...

Never been to Vegas, but no matter where you go NEVER change money at an airport.

TCs are fine, you can also change them at any casino cage at no cost

Cash machines are not a good way to go in Vegas, a few have reasonable charges but many are really bad

Encore is gorgeous just not sure I could live with the location

I fly to Vegas in 3 weeks  Having 5 nights in Ballys casino in Vegas and then driving to Anaheim for 8 nights. Budgeting about $200 a day for 2 of us. Have got a car booked for the whole time we are there but dont think we will use it much in vegas as we are just planning on exploring the strip.

Anyone done the drive from vegas to LA? Planning on taking the I15 and stopping off a few times along the way.

very true

unless you pre-book it... Tavelex rates aren't so bad if booked ahead of time. Certainly close enough to anywhere else to make it not worth paying for parking in your local town to pick it up if you're only after a few hundred!

Try and get a room in North Tower, South Tower rooms are very dated

Not done the LA drive but do know it is quite boring and traffic is very bad into Vegas on a Friday and out on a Sunday

Update! So most hotels won't allow three blokes in a room citing health and safety.

The Mirage will fit in a roll up bed for $30 a night which is quite reasonable, but we're trying to get a fourth traveller.

Anyone been to the Mirage? Seems quite nice and central.

Mirage is fine, rooms have been recently updated and location is reasonable

We had 3 of us in a room at the MGM, originally booked for 2 but rang them up saying someone else had booked on.

They didn't even charge us any extra for the room!

Hey Sid!

There seems to be a lot of people on here who know about vegas, especially rotty! But ill just give my 2p's worth. I went back in November for a week with some uni mates. We got our flights off statravel, for just under 400. They were connecting, had to stop off in san fran but that wasnt too bad, only 2-3 hours wait. They did have a direct virgin flight for 250!!, but that went the next day we looked. must have been a sale!

I stayed in desert paradise resort, using my mates time shares, so I dont have much on the accom front, but we all took around 600-700 spending, and were pretty much on the lash every night, clubbing, eating out, shopping and such. That lasted us...just. What rotty said though, you can spend a lot more money out there. Remember, the house always wins!
