Russian 'Nuke' Bombers Invade British Airspace - Just wanted to discuss this

I just saw this article on yahoo news, http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100325/tuk-russian-nuke-bombers-invade-british-45dbed5.html and was wondering what you guys think of this?

Why did those russians come into our air space?
couldn't something like that start a war? haven't wars started in the past over smaller things then this?
And howcome our jets didnt shoot em down?
howcome in the article it says we just followed them for 4 hours?
Shouldnt they have just shot them down? wtf?
and is the priminister talking about this on the news or what?

I'd like to hear your feedback.
 
It happens relatively often they just like to give us a poke every now and again and let us know their still around
 
The Ruskies do this on a regular basis. Often they will be intercepted and escorted out of our airspace.

They don't shoot them down because they don't pose an immediate threat and shooting at them could very well start a war.

The typhoon and tornado are capable of carrying nukes iirc:p

Heck most planes are :D


Although nice to see they've moved onto Tu160's instead of bears.

The tu160's are staggeringly beautiful planes.


probably just trying to gode the RAF into sending typhoons out to intercept so they can time/take photos/get more accurate information.
 
They've been doing this for decades.

It to test our response time, let us know they are still capable of hurting us (as in, hey Brits, we have a nice up and running nuclear bomber, hey Brits, look what we got here's proof we're still all capable on the 'blow you to peices' front ..!), and also keep their crews at a proven constant state of operational readiness for their training ..

And of course they take photos of our inteceptors to see if we've sellotaped anything extra to our planes, so the boys back in Moscow can try and figure out what it is we did to improve our planes ..

We don't shoot them down because we don't want world war 3!

used to happen all the time, its just a way of saying hello world we still have big scary planes which can strike at you

has happened a few times recently, no biggie, we just fly up interceptors, everyone waves at each other and then bugs out
 
Some of the replies have been that they do this on a regular bases? But arent we in our rights to shoot at them? And isn't it wrong of them to do this? Is it only us they do this to? If they did it to USA surely they'd be shot down? But we're friends with USA and are helping them in iraq so wont USA help us? And shouldnt Russia fear us because we have USA on our side?

We could shoot them down, but do you really want to start a war with one of the largest nuclear powers in the world?


If we started a war with Russia no one would help us.


Just like if Iran invaded Florida you wouldn't see Mexico invading Texas in support.


lol at America helping against Russia though, they won't even declare out sovereignty in the Falklands so no they wouldn't get of their ases even if Germany invaded Poland again.
 
they do do it with the USA, fly close sorties near alaska etc

its not about shooting, its a show of force
used to happen all the time during the cold war to test borders and response times

putin started it up again a year or two ago
russia wants to show the world that its airforce isnt as ruined as everyone thinks

most of the time NATO is even informed of the route and times by russia

Come on fellas, I expected more from you, THIS IS ENGLAND! how can they mess with us???!!!3434 we're the great british empire, lol, we're a 1st world country, maybe we're small and people call us an island, but we did good in WW2 didnt we, and I thought we were quite strong, why dont we smash them to peices when they come near us? Who do they think they're??3/2?£$?$

Well thats a whole host of questions there. They do it to everyone. Everyone does it to everyone. If the pilots start getting narky with each other rather then wave pleasently and bug-out, things like this:

If they did it to the US, which they do, the Pacific fleet tends to send up the inteceptors so they don't get as close. Again they don't shoot them down because no-one ACTUALLY wants WW3! They don't half like flexing their muscles though!
 
Shooting them down would be a bad idea, I'm sure lots of different countries do this to each other.
 
Ok I see your point. So you think its nothing to worry about then? Nobody is ever gona attack us coz we got nukes?

I have a question though from what you've all said, howcome you said USA wont help us, but we went to IRAQ for them? I thought they were our allies?
