Wow!

For years ive had a nice beard and one day, bored, shaved it off with an electric shaver, now it was not pain free and not that close a shave. Nothing a stocking would glide over thats for sure :)

So, used them 10 in a packet blue razors, not bad, better than electric, then i spent £20 on a fusion thing, even better than the blue razors..

Reading on here, i bought myself a Merkur, brushed steel thing for £40 and some feather blades to see what the fuss was about...

O boy.....

Best £40 ive spent in terms of shaving! so close and easy to use, no cuts [yet] and a joy to use with the G.eo trump cream i have too.

so, if your looking for a decent shaver, go for the Merkur!

Cheers for the advice on this forum guys, was well worth asking!

PS - not sure what number to use it on, so trying 1 - 6 as i go, 1 seemed ok, 2 was nice.. will use 3 and 4 next time i need a shave :)

Ive been wondering whether or not to get one really....I get rashes anyway on a good day, and id be worried about cutting myself :p

Maybe one day eh

In the world of double edge safety razors, Merkur is king. I use and recommend the Futur 760.

Technik die begeistert!

It is not a cut throat, it uses blades and these are housed in a unit to stop cuts, almost.

The one i got was a Futur Brushed Steel Razor, feels good in the hands too, nice and weighty.

If you want no more rash, buy it... imo. with the cream to, and a decent brush :)

I used my dad's Merkur Vision the other day and it was the best shave I've ever had. Will be picking myself up a cheaper safety one and some blades after pay day.

Yup, Merkur + your choice of blade + a good soap = shaving heaven. You won't easily get anything better.

Bank robbers take note, electric shavers are no good for quick disguise changes. ;)

I sort of reckon I should try a Merkur at some point as I do use a cheap safety razor at the moment and it might prove worthwhile but I'm somewhat loathe to spend the money given my continued inability to consistently shave myself without getting cuts on my face. It's not something that happens all that often but weirdly it makes no difference whether I'm shaving in a rush or not, quite randomly I'll just manage to hack a bit of my face off.

Meh - no point - a Gillette lasts me around 2-3 months because I always have "designer stubble" so it's always just cleaning up on my cheeks and neck. I haven't cut myself shaving in about 15 years and I don't intend to start now.

I caught myself on the cheek on sunday morning, you just feel the little nick and then you know "yep, that's a big cut".

Has anyone tried a vintage safety razor, rather than a new Merkur?

I see Vintage sets on ebay and wonder if it might be a good way to save a few bob but still get something of Merkur quality.

TFTI!

not sure I'd trust myself with a cut-throat razor, plus I only need to shave once a week :D

Merkurs aren't cut throat razors, they're double edged safety blades. I've yet to cut myself using one for about 12 months (a Parker, iirc... bit cheaper but does the job ok).
