Folding@Home news - 24th March

That should be very helpful Biffa, so I thank you for the summary. It's left me a bit confused as to why I'm seeing three gpu clients when I've only got two cards. They're both 8800gt's, but that's probably enough for me to put a script together that restarts both graphics cards when one of them stalls. Cheers

edit: I'm typing really slowly today. Kill them all sounds like the way to go to me too :)

Those weren't the downloaded files though, but from the output from top.

Or I'm just being really, really slow today. Which is quite possible. Apparently one of my cards stopped running at 10am and I only just noticed, so that's three gpu clients active when only one card is doing anything.

f@h downloads them and keeps them in the directory and runs them when it download a core that needs it.

So you image shows that you have 4xA1cores running probably on a quad core cpu, and 3 gfx cores running (3 gfx cards)

If you could see all the processes in top you would probably see the three Folding@home gpu applications and one F@H cpu application, not sure what they are called on Linux but they are called [email protected] and [email protected] on windows

I have successfully got my second GPU folding. I am pray I don't get that stupid WU on this one. I tried starting up my other GPU client again after leaving it 24 hours - with everything deleted except the client.cfg, .exe and the .dlls. Boom, downloads that ****** WU again! :(

It's absolutely bloody shocking I keep getting the same WU after 2 days.

I know how have two GPUs running. Which I am told should be impossible because in Vista+ you need both plugged into a monitor or use a dummy plug! :/

I got the annoying one working by changing the Machine ID. I think if I avoid ID 2 ill avoid that WU - I will know in an hour or two when these are done. Only getting 3 and 5K PPD tho :(

That's the thing though, I've only got two graphics cards, and they're both single gpu versions (8800gt). Starting to think that reinstalling folding@home is the way to go. Both cards hung almost as soon as I went to sleep then did nothing overnight, frustrating.

Jon do you have fah installed in separate directories? e.g.:

/fah/cpu
/fah/gpu1
/fah/gpu2

Suspect you might have set one gpu up as a service (not sure if you can do this on Linux) and are also running it manually.

Just check your -configonly settings on the two gpu installs before wiping.

I believe last night I had two clients running on one GPU!

With "both" GPUs running I had PPDs of 3k and 5k. I then did some fiddling and one of the clients wouldn't start, saying my GPU wasn't compatible. The next one ran fine, now with a PPD of 8k!

Coincidence? :p

I think my copy of Debian is generally quite knackered to be honest. F@H config files look fine, and I don't know how to run one as a service in linux either. Had to reboot it earlier because gnome-do kept starting itself and using two of the cores. It's running two copies of FahCore_11.exe, and FahCore_14.exe is nowhere to be seen. I blame myself for this, just can't leave a working OS alone :)

Cheers for all your help though, it's appreciated.

Why are you using Debian, btw? Are you using -bigadv? Else you may as well use Windows, from the point of Folding anyway, since the A3 units.

I moved from Debian to Ubuntu on the grounds that I believe Ubuntu is now putting more effort into being pretty and user friendly than into being stable. X deals with multiple monitors far better than windows. There's many reasons why I'm using linux instead of windows beyond that though, probably best left to the windows/linux subforums. I do use the bigadv flag when I'm fairly sure I don't need to reboot into windows for a few days, I've just spent a lot of time using cad recently. CAD + folding at the same time doesn't work well for me.

Basically I do most of my degree using this computer, folding has to come second really :)

ok I've not been running FAH for a while now, nice to see some borg somewhere is still going strong!

Fair enough, I suppose I've never really looked into the advantages of Linux.

Each OS has its place. Windows does some stuff better than Linux which does some stuff better than OSX which does some stuff better than Windows and just about every other combination you can think of.

Debates on individual merits are great, but when you get the fanboys involved they make ridiculous claims that one is superior to the other in every way. It just isn't true, and only shows most fanboy's lack of knowledge. I do not respect the opinion of anyone who dismisses an OS out of hand.

Ubuntu is a great OS and I ran it for almost a year exlusively [except when I wanted to game of course] when the SMP client first arrived. Although I run Windows almost exlusively now, I would like to see some Linux features in Windows [the aptitude package manager is a major one!] and also some OSX features.

At the end of the day you use whatever best suits your needs. There is no right or wrong choice.

Gone a bit OT there, sorry! :D
