Im absolutely amazed by my MSI HD5850 and as Ive not seen them mentioned much on here I thought Id share why.

Firstly It was purchased for a very healthy £220 inc next day del

The default clocks were 765/1125.

Was already really pleased with my purchase but then I started overclocking her.

As it was an MSI there was no need to bios flash to change voltage, just latest Afterburner. Took a while to find the best stable clock but have finished with 1000/1175 with 1.284v
After 2.5 hours of Metro 2033 the max temp I reached was 68`c with 45% fan speed.

I know that each card will be different but 1Ghz core with stock cooling for £220 , Im very happy :D

Good to hear and nice overclock!
I think if you buy one from Asus, MSi or Gigabyte(I think?) it's pretty much expected to hit 1000/1100.

Any others and you'll need to mess about with flashing to play with the volts.

Nice. My Asus craps out at anything above 880 on the core on stock voltage. Do you think 1.284v will be safe for 24/7 usage? I'm tempted to up the voltage and see what happens :)

1.28v does seem a little on the high side.

Think the general consensus is to keep volts under 1.25v and temps under 80c.
Push it any more than that and you may end up killing the card off early. Many have theirs running at 1.3v and have no issues so its what ever you feel comfortable with.

Gigabyte dont offer unlocked overclocking like Asus and MSI do.

My mistake, I was under the impression they did for some reason.

Thats awesome man u can get such huge overlocks these days its great. I remember back when i had an 8800gts and i had it running at 640 up from 500mhz with no volts and i was well impressed at that. But 235mhz increase for free well thats just too good. It will earily outgun a stock 5870 even a gtx295 and perhaps fermi too. Wel find out tomoro tho. Enjoy!:-)

Use a profile with Afterburner just for gaming, When you finish gaming hit 'reset' and all goes back to stock.

I find 1.25 is fine for 1000 core, I would go to 1.3 for 1000 if it needed it just for a few hours gaming sessions TBH.

I have owned two Asus 5850's and one Asus 5870.

5850 #1 did 1000core/1200mem @ 1.275v
5850 #2 does 1025core/1300mem @ 1.25v
5870 did 1000/1300 @ 1.3v

All did 1000core easily, but I kept 5850 #2 because it can do it at the lowest volts and the memory overclocks really well too.

I have an Afterburner profile set up that I enable when I want to game then reset when finished, as the guy above said.

Ive really pushed it hard over the last day or so with loop after loop of vantage and had Ati tool searching for artifacts over night. Temps have never gone above 72`c

The only issue I have had is that CODMW2 doesn't seem to like anything above the standard 765 core but this could be a 10.3a issue.

And...

Would I be right in thinking that my warranty would cover any voltage changes made through Afterburner? After all they are supplying the software and even advertise that voltage is unlockable on their cards? just a thought

oh and big thanks to UKDTweak and the others for their help :D

ooEy

I'm fairly sure as your card is an MSI, that the warrenty cover OC failures :)
If you created Profile 1 saved with your cards Defaults, and Profile 2 with your OC speeds, you would not need to manually apply the changes when running a game, MSI will do it for you...
You can then setup Profiles within the MSI software for indiviual games, the Global setting will use your 2d/3d settings from the Profiles settings page to automatically change profiles for any game, but you could add in a profile for CODMW2 to use the defaults speeds and not the OC profile :)

Cool :D

In that case Im gonna stick 1.35v through her and see what she can do ;)
