I'm after a fun weekend car for around £3k to £3.5k max. I almost bought a Corrado VR6 and am still very interested in one. But before I do, what elso is there for that kind of money? I was quite amazed to see early E36 M3's as low as that (or will they be dogs??)

My main car is a five door Golf V6 4Motion with all the toys. Safe and great for the kids but not quite the fun I want. So I'm open to suggestions. Selling the Golf and buying another car isn't really an option because I have kids and I'm really just after a cheap fun car for myself.

This, but I'd cross the MX5 off, as it will feel slow in comparison to your 4Motion, and the MR2 is only really worth it if its a Turbo.

I disagree with some of what you've said...I bought a 1.8 MX5 after having owned a MK4 Golf R32 for two and a half years...it feels slower yes but not massively, it's great fun, in fact more fun than the R32, it's chuckable, it handles superbly and I actually much prefer it to driving the R32 - especially as it's topless most the time - a perfect weekend car (I use mine as a daily driver) and at £3.5k you could pick up a great one.

Thanks guys. I was tempted by the MX5 for a bit but it will probably be parked outside under a tree so I think the roof will get manky very quickly. I think I've narrowed it down to the Corrado or an E36 of some description. The E36 is clearly the better car but I'm really liking to Corrado as they are far more rare.

I have a e36 328i sport with a few mods and absolutely love finding the limits of it. Driven an mx5 recently and that was very fun but in a different "pedal to the floor no danger" type of feeling.

Drive a few. If you was local you could have a spin in mine.

Thanks. Ironically I was in Bristol on Sunday test driving a car I am considering :)

If you like the E36, why dont you sell the Golf and get an E46? A 3 series in non coupe/convertible form is as practical as a Golf, probably more so

Isn't the V6 4Motion the one with a 2.8l engine? Surely a 2.8 V6 in a Golf is more than enough fun? :p

For 3.5k I'd look at an MR2.

I honestly dont see the point in running a 2.8 Golf for family and a 3.0 4 door e46 for fun. Presumably the Golf is worth about the same again, which would give you a decent budget for a good E46 - fun and practical, plus saves you the cost of running 2 cars

It would be one thing if the Golf was a 1.9 TDI or something as that would be a lot cheaper to run, but in this case it seems daft
