Hey guys, my father recently killed his budget all in one home cinema system, and much to my delight has decided he wants to take a step up in terms in quality, he has set me a budget of around 800 pound sterling for a DVD player, amp/receiver and speakers. We do not have a HD TV, so no blueray needed.

So far my thoughts have been:

ONKYO DVSP406 DVD PLAYER - 80 quid
Q ACOUSTICS 1010i 5.1 SPEAKER PACKAGE 350 quid
YAMAHA RXV765 HOME CINEMA AMPLIFIER 370 quid

All of which comes to around 800.

Your help will be much appreciated!

Josh.

i can vouch for the 765 it was over a 500 bucks amp a few months ago and as I needed front pre outs this was the best amp for the price, i have this driving my rears and centre. As for the speakers the QA get good reviews, i nearly went for these as rears but after seeing them in the flesh i decided they where a bit too big for what i wanted so i went for monitor audio r90s as they go well with Yammy's.

My father is the sort of person who will only, literally only upgrade when something is broken, he still used a 20 year old tv in his bedroom. So broken sound system = new sound system to the best he can afford. The Tv's time will come, il make sure of it haha!

Same, but I actually admire him for it. There are far more important things to be spending money on than mindless consumer products.

Property
Current investments
Education
Holidays
Activities
Hobbies that develop your knowledge / skills / character
Savings for kid's education

That said you've got to have some fun with your money.

I have to add,

A great Sound system paired with a poor Television does not make too much sense to me in this day and age, esp with the likes of the Bluray players for not much more than your spec'd unit above.

I would seriously think about talking him into the current TV being relocated into his bedroom and a nice new one for the living room.

Thank you all for your input so far, and i would agree, but he is big into his music and sound, for him the picture is secondary to a good sound system. He is also 66 and cant afford to shell out more at this point, so the Tv will have to come later, and believe, it shall come :P
