Hi,

I think I am right in saying there are several dx11 titles out now.

Have those of you that have bought the dx11 capable cards found the effects in games worth it? In other words is there a big difference, so far with what titles are available, in the visuals and if so, has there been any big performace drops with the addition of dx11?

Just curious as I have been reading comments about when dx11 effects are applied that there can be on occasion a bit of a drop in fps.

Opinions please. :)

Ta.

Dx11 can give better performance than dx10 it all depends how its implemented.Battle Forge for instance has better performance with dx11.If its used to pile on eye candy then you will lose some frames yes but that goes for anything thats asked to draw more detail.

What an unusual proposal.

More strain is put on something and it doesn't perform as well as when it's under...less strain....huh.

I'm sorry I just don't follow.

Sorry if I didn't put it across too clearly.
I am trying to work out if it is worth me upgrading from my current card for two reasons :

1) Are the differences from dx10 to dx11 that much better? Is there with what dx11 titles there are, a substantial jump in eye candy?

2) If so, generally speaking is there a big performance hit when applied?

I know 'metro' isn't perhaps a good example since people with 5970's have had issues with it so I wasn't referring directly to that game alone.

Oh see now your questions makes more sense.

I personally wouldn't upgrade yet, in fact I haven't, there are neither enough DX11 games out of a high enough quality to warrant it and no game yet has shown a realistic jump in eye candy or difference in frame rates (besides battle forge) to for DX11 to be worth using.

I certainly wouldn't upgrade until Nvidia's new cards have been out a while.

I changed to the 5870 from a 4870x2 and in performance terms they are very close.Dx9 nothing in it dx10 the 5870 just edges it in fps terms.

I changed because my x2 sounded like a leaf blower and ran very hot while the 5870 runs much cooler and quieter and has the dx11 as a bonus.

The difference in eye candy is like going from dx9 to dx10 its nice to have but not mind blowingly better no.

The 5870 is the best gfx card ive owned and much prefer it to the x2 but its £300 for the same frame rates you have now.

Fermi benches will be out tomorrow some time so maybe nvidia has raised the dx11 game so check them out arc@css.

^^Ta fella. Think I'll hang on for a bit longer then. :) Was going to consider the new nvidia cards but as I have an xfire only mobo, I should utilise that when and if I upgrade. Will think some more before I make a decision.

One of the gripes that I do have with the X2, as you mentioned, is the noise and steadily rising temps. This is partly what has made me consider changing it. Does my head in some days, lol. :D I'll have to buy some more compressed air I suppose, or a hair dryer, anything that will get rid of the dust since trying to remove the shroud has been a no go for me.

The cards themselves are great, DX11 meh, I want every game to be in DX10/DX11 but people are holding it back with windows xp, microsoft need to kill it asap, devs cba to make use of the newer tech, the economy blah blah blah maybe and if they release some more consoles which I hope will be DX11 then maybe things will move along

I just bought the 5770s for the price to performance, plus low power consumption as I disliked my 4870s.

Right now I would still really like 5850s, but I am happy with what I have, low power / noise / heat, and great performance plus DX11.

I dont really notice the DX11 at all, just how much better the cards are (They are much much faster and cooler when overclocked than my 4870s were at stock frequencies).

Going from 4850s to 4870s was a mistake for me, I should have just kept the 4850s and waited for these. That is a lesson learnt to wait for the next midrange, however the 5850s are also really good and nowhere near as inefficient as the 4870s were. I'll basically just buy new and sell old when I can get a better pair of midrange cards around the <£150 price point.

Hey..... I was on Windows XP for years. I loved the O/S and if it wasn't for the increase in memory to 4GB I'd perhaps still be using it today.. lol

Ok Windows 7 is pretty decent, but Windows XP did me proud for many a year. Is tessellation a DX11 feature? I've got Dirt 2, and I'd be honest. I really do not see much from when I played it on WinXP to Win 7 with DX11...

Could just be me...

^^Yeah, I most probably will hang fire for a mo. It's funny, I've given basic common sense advice to others but when it comes to myself it seems more difficult. :D

Well, i had a 4870 and it did it's job well, just not in Far Cry 2 because of micro-stuttering issues and in LOTRO where Directx10 wouldn't work, but the 5850 i have has made it a lot more worthwhile when playing games, especially the increase of FPS.

Directx11 looks nice, and i haven't encountered any performance drops whatsoever.

While your waiting for the ATi refresh perhaps you should consider investing in an Arctic Cooling Accelero for your 4870X2? I've got one on mine and its does a great job. It's silent up until +45% fan speed and temps never exceed 50c.

Food for thought....

Nope easy as Sunday morning.

Nice little guide with it too that's detailed enough. Ought to take no longer than 20mins to fit.
