Just because many people didn't know that it was RWD, doesn't mean that it is completely unsuitable for the car and a stupid idea?
Not unsuitable at all really, cheaper to produce than designing a whole new drivetrain and engine layout and gives them the marketing 'edge'
This. Most of the 'great unwashed' don't care about cars and buy a BMW/Audi because it has a BMW/Audi badge on the front, not because they've got 4 or RWD and they won't be able to tell the difference

It also show how many people buy it for the badge.............
But do you see someone in a 116i and think OMG they're loaded?
I just think.. reasonable alternative to a focus or a golf, especially if it's from the company car list.

To be fair, it's like the fisher price "My first bmw", for people who can't really afford a proper bmw but just want the badge.

I'd rather not be able to afford a proper BMW and instead only have £20,000 for a 1 Series instead of a VW Bora.

We are looking into a 1 series as a next car, we like the look, we like the way it drives, not too big for the gf (women!), and slightly better build than the focus / golf. Trying to push for the 130i however the gf is wanting the 120d
The badge just comes with the car, if it had a skoda badge on the front wouldnt bother me at all...

Not everyone buys a car to go maring down country lanes at arrrggghmph kicking the tail out and applying a "dab of oppo'" or whatever ghastly phrase people use.
Do people in general take umbrage because someone doesn't know the exact CC of their car engine? Or what size the wheels are? Or what torque actually is? Or the relationship between PS and BHP. All of those are equally irrelevant to someone who uses a car for getting from A to B.
Some people buy a badge, because some people buy a badge. It doesn't mean anything other than that.

Why the hell do people draw the conclusion that just because people don't know what drivetrain a car has they are morons.
To me, it's basic knowledge....like auto/manual gearbox. If you are going to own the vehicle, you should learn this.
