Hi guys,

I'm just ringing around local garages for a quote as a service is due on my car. Any ideas roughly what is the going rate for this service on my car? Anyone have any particularly good recomendations in the Hertfordshire/North London area?

So far I've tried BMW Watford and they quoted £349 inc VAT.

Thanks

£349 is a pretty good price and should be the standard price most BMW dealers will offer as its covered by BMW Value Servicing.

The Inspection II is both labour and parts intensive - 6.5 litres of LL01 Approved oil, £70-80 worth of other parts and then the labour. A decent enough Indy will ask about £280-£350 for the work but you have to ask if its worth it for that small a saving.

If anyone is significantly cheaper you have to wonder what bits they are missing out or what non-genuine parts are being used.

I know for my E46 it was a "special" price at every BMW garage as they have this "offer" on most models of that age so I assume your's would be included in the same category.

For me it was £319 at every BMW garage I tried. Birmingham, Leicester, Coventry, Milton Keynes, Northampton all quoted the same "special" price.

I'm only assuming yours will be in the same category and therefore have the same fixed price from every BMW garage because they said it was by age, but I could be wrong.

Just had my E46 serviced, was the same £319. I did ask around and even "up norf" it was the same price. BMW have fixed the prices nationwide by the look of it.

Is this BMW Value servicing something that is going to stay about, or is it just an interim thing at the moment to drum up business?

For Inspection II?? Strange that it's £8 cheaper:confused:

And £108 cheaper at a specialist seems very good value! Did they do a decent job? Since it was the first service after I bought it I thought I may as well get it looked over properly and keep the FBMWSH so I guess it was worth the money in the long run.

Yup. T'was quite funny because first they wanted something ridiculous like £380, and i told him that i had another specialist who would do it, using genuine parts for £211 and asked if he could bring the price down a bit. He called me back later and said he could do it for £311 (ex. brake fluid). I said i'd think about it, he took down my name but i didn't call him back.

Yeah i know. I asked what it included (thinking he might just add on things later on) and everything was included. He said that i could have genuine parts put on (where possible) for another £20. I've been to him before for other things and he was a top guy and he knew his stuff (spent the last 20 years working for dealers in the area). Even offered to loan me a Mini Cooper for the day.

I was going to take it to him this weekend, but since i'm going to the meet in Southampton it'll have to wait until next week

No wonder he's cheap if he isn't using genuine parts, its the parts that add the most cost, especially the oil - he wont be using LL01 Approved oil for example at that money, but then I guess its your choice as to whether you want that or not :)

It is only another £20 for genuine parts which have also have been made as a pattern part (as things like Spark plugs aren't made by BMW anyway). The oil is Mobil 1 fully synth, BMW approved. :)

Hi Gaygle,

Thanks for the enquiry, I am pleased to quote prices below for an Inspection 2 service, brake fluid and replacement springs.

Inspection II £211 inc
Brake Fluid change £30.31 inc
Rear Springs (pair) £199.75 inc

The Inspection 2 service includes various 'checks' together with replacing the oil and oil filter, the microfilter, air filter and spark plugs.

I have quoted to replace both rear springs as BMW recommend replacing as a pair, however if you would like only one replaced the cost would be £123.37.

If you have any queries or would like to arrange an appointment please do not hesitate to contact me on or by email.

Regards,

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for those very competitive prices. I just have a few questions – firstly, do you use Genuine BMW parts? Secondly, do you use Castrol EDGE 0W40 Full Synth oil? And thirdly, do you provide a courtesy car whilst you’re servicing mine?

Thanks in advance

Hi Gaygle,

In answer to your questions,

All of the parts we use are either Original Equipment or 'genuine' BMW. OE parts are as originally supplied on the vehicle from manufacture, however, some parts are only available to purchase through the BMW dealer network and in these cases we purchase 'genuine' BMW. So for example; BMW don't actually make the spark plugs they use certain brands, and re-package them to sell on, OE spark plugs would be the same brand just in their own packaging. I hope that makes sense, our philosophy is not to use cheap inferior products but to provide the same quality for a lower price. The quote I have given includes using all OE parts, if you would prefer I can re-quote using dealer supplied parts.

The oil that we use is Mobil Fully Synthetic, BMW are currently in partnership with Castrol and recommend Castrol oils, however the Mobil oil we use is approved by BMW for your model.

Regards,

Andrew

OE parts are ok, pattern parts arent.

Oh, um, what are "OE" parts and what are "pattern" parts? I thought they were the same

May I ask which specialist? Essex is close enough.

He's actually in Suffolk (Bury St Edmunds) and the place is called "Warne Motors Bury".

Really nice guy, ended up just chatting to him for nearly an hour and he took me around his new garage and showed me how the equipment worked. Hw told me he had worked for BMW dealers in East Anglia for 20+ years, but had just got sick of his managers telling him how to serve the dealership best, rather than the customer - and actually seemed quite passionate about customer service.
