another 5770 or a 470gtx?

What's the rest of your setup? If you want to go nvidia then go 260 SLI...I'm considering it. Overclocked their performance is probably better than a 480GTX. Also quieter and don't run at 90billion degrees.

could be quite a valid option considering they can be had for £100 when they pop up on the mm, it all depends on whether the op cares about dx11 or not

With the 5850, the pci ports are at the back, so you'll have to add an extra 1.5 inches for the two 6 pin cables, making it 13 inches, not much shorter than the 5870 than we were led to believe.

If you can apply the extra space go for 5850/5870, you'll be bonkers to go for a 470 considering that the power produced should come from xfire/sli setups instead.

Another 260 is a good idea if you already have one and both together would probably produce the same heat than say... the 470 lol

p.s you've got lots of decision making to do Marc hehe :P

If your case is too small to fit the 5870 in why would you put in the roasty toasty gtx480,

I had the 8800gtxs in sli and the were like a fan oven, i turned the radiators off in the 2 bedrooms upstairs cause that was enough to heat them with the pc no 24/7, not to mention the power consumption

I think people seriously have to look at these temps and the noise first and performance later, what happens during the summer when you cant get any cool air into the house! BSOD/artifact fest

why do people keep saying the 4870 is the 5850's competitor when it is clearly competing with the 5870? the 470 is the same price as the 5870 so it should be compared to that and the 480 is a similar price to the 5970 so it should be compared to that. i dont remember when products were classsed as competitors based on similar performance its always been based on products at the same price point and then performance is reviewed between them.
