hey guys, well trodden ground im sure but my mondeo (mk3) has cost me many 1,000's in injectors clutches and turbos lately and i need something new. must be less than 50k miles, must be TD or at least 50mpg average and must be comfortable (i live in my car :() size is not much of a factor but needs 4/5 doors and to be comfortable for passengers.

Im toying with new mondy (mk4) new focus, bmw 5 series (yeah hard to get at less than 100k miles even for 10grand) new octavia.

Larger 4x4 type vehicles like the nissan quashquai and CRV would be handy as i spend a lot of time on crappy farm tracks (ive broken several sumps)

Need advice!!! I do 1k miles per week!

I don't think you can go wrong with any of your suggestions. I know nothing about any of these cars, but if you need a bit of extra ground clearance then how about a Volvo XC70 or a Subaru Forester (not sure the diesel engine has been around long enough though). An X5 is a 5 series on stilts, and would be a good shout, but I don't think you'll find a non-leggy example for your budget. Another car that I know nothing about, but perhaps a Land Rover Discovery? I don't know how refined it is for eating up the motorways and perhaps would be a little too old in your budget, but you never know.

You aren't likely to get an X5 that's going to cost less than a Mondeo to run, lets get that one out of the way for a start :)

I'll have a think about it anyway, I'm too tired too be all that helpful right now.

Get an A6 allroad or if they are too much then how about the Subaru Outback? Although do they even do a diesel? Not sure. XC70 might be worth looking at. All have a bit more protection under the car to absorb a couple of bumps.

I know it's slightly over mileage but assuming you don't drunkenly drive into a kerb and screw the suspension (my bad) they are utterly bulletproof. The last journey I ever did in my A6 was 2600 miles in THREE DAYS and I was fine after that. They are stupidly comfortable.

For that price and that mileage I want a something like a Jag XJ but since thats out your budget I would go for the mk4 mondeo.

Out of interest why such a great mileage?

If you have new injectors, a new turbo, and a new clutch, then keep the mondeo. Its perfect now

1,000 miles a week? Eeessh.

Why don't you just choose the car of your choice for £8k and get an LPG conversion?

The LPG element of it will pay for itself in no time, and you won't have to worry about DMF/clutch/injectors/turbos and the rest of the nonsense associated with high mileage diesels.

the rear left wheel vibrates horribly, the turbo doesnt really work (no power other boost issues maybe maf/map) the front wheel knocks on acceleration and braking the paint work is scratched....

Im against an X5 because of the whole £1000 per set of shoes, i mean with my milage its just not feasable. LPG is no go as my nearest filler is 100miles away (i live in cardigan west wales).

That audi all road looks nice will also look at the volvo

Presumably the mondeo has silly mileage on it by now?

XC70 was probably one of the best suggestions for your needs:

Although the diesels have similar potential issues as the Mondeo, you wont find many diesels where injectors/turbos/flywheels arent potential trouble spots

I have to echo Jez's comment. Sounds like you might have a boost leak and possible some driveshaft and/or wheel bearing issues or something - nothing that should cost loads of £.

Who know what problems you'll have with a new car? At least with this one you know what you've had replaced. I'd drive it for a bit longer and save some £ personally.

but its on 225k miles? It wont go forever and also image is important for my work.

I would look into the LPG idea someone had a few posts back and get a nice big petrol lump.

Can't be that important if you've been knocking around in a Mondeo for the last 200,000 miles....

What is it that you do?

Well i have to drive something that looks reasonable. Im a consultant so cant go pulling up in either a sporty number or anything too old (you and i both know that average joe only looks at the plate for first impressions)

The reason ive been in the mondeo for so long is that its easily one of the nicest looking cars for the money especially as i have the top spec facelift one with the all cream leather interior, the usual reaction it got was "bloody hell your doing well". Need something that gives that same impression but is going to be reliable as poss and the higher ride height will help me tackle some of the awful welsh backroads which is something i wasnt aware of before buying the mondy

I was going to recommend an E38 730d but then I remembered that they didn't make them in RHD..

Get another Mondeo if you're happy with the you had.
Spend less and stick the rest in a fund for repairs.

Why would he even consider an E38 on a £10k budget  If recommending a 7-series then an E65 730d is the one he would get.
