***Nvidia GTX480 & 470 reviews & discussion***

What? I didn't say there was any issue, I said the 470 was one of the few cards that will work with the CUDA accelerated elements of the CS5 suite. You said surely any CUDA enabled card would work, I pointed out you were wrong. It's nothing to do with Adobe's 'issues' or me needing anything, especially a card I never mentioned

No you mentioned it as a justification for someone buying one of these, while I said that CUDA is CUDA and that you can pick up one of the gazillion re-branded NV cards and stick it as a 2nd card into an ATI system and still have CUDA that will then work with any non-intentionally crippled CUDA software.

NV have done what they intended though, they probably knew they weren't going to win the battle and so caused a lot of conspiracy surrounding 'Fermi'. It's got everyone talking and speculating and has you guys chatting 15 pages on...

hmm, been planning a system around a 5850 for a couple of weeks. Was hoping fermi would drive the prices of ATI cards down a wee bit before I splashed, I suspect this will not now happen. Fingers crossed ATI press what advantages they have and get super-aggressive with their pricing regardless but I'm not going to hold my breath!

Yes, but it doesn't help them in any way for us to spend 15 pages saying how crap and pointless Fermi is and how we are sticking to ATI ...

Just curious, say if the GTX 480 was £100 cheaper, would people buy it then over the HD 5870? Or would the temperature, noise and power draw be too much to sacrifice for a 5-10% performance increase?

I know it's never going to happen, but would be interested to hear people's thoughts anyway!

i loled so hard at the hitler reaction video

This is very dishertening. I was hoping for the 470 to put in a better performance on price if nothing else (Couldn't really care about the power or heat), because it's one of the few cards that will work with the CUDA accelerated elements of Adobe's CS5.

Still, it's peanuts compared to what I spend on camera gear, monitors, printing, or shoots in general, so hey ho!

That's very nice, but it won't work with the CUDA accelerated elements of the CS5 suite, which is what I was talking about. So if you wouldn't mind directing your childish GPU aggression elsewhere :)

So are you saying that a person who has a ATI card should then buy at least a 285GTX for cuda and CS5?

As you would know the new version of cuda is on the GPU as well as software. My 8800GTX won't do some HD and other things in CS4 but a 285GTX will.

And with CS5's mercury playback engine being CUDA dependant it's cheaper for me to buy a 480. Simples really.

Question:

How many of you would go from a GTX 275 running 100% stable clocks of 700/1600/1250 (so pretty much stock 285 perf) to a 5870 if it was going to cost you £150 (after sale of gtx 275 ofcourse)

I am very tempted :(, even though i really don't need to!

Preordered a 480 GTX. The only thing I'm worried about is the loudness. Hope it can be tamed down a bit by software regulation or so.
Other than that it's the fastest single core graphics card I can get, I like the physics effects and love 3DVision, which had sporadic issues with my 295 GTX SLI configuration.
Once ATI get their acts together in terms of 3D capability I might consider purchasing one, but I dont't exspect this to happen anytime soon.

Hitler video was very funny.

As someone who has owned both colour cards at some point or another, I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

From all the reviews I have read, the 480 is the fastest single GPU card.

It not fastest by a massive amount and it draws more power and generates more heat. My PC has been steadily doing that for years, so no change there then.

But from some of the comments you would have thought that the launch of the 480 was a complete disaster, when really it's just not quite what it was supposed to be and the fact that it's six months late makes it all the more disappointing.

I will just wait for prices to drop or the 495 to come along. The fact that PC games are being held back by console hardware means my Q9550 and GTX 260 cut the mustard with the vast majority of games out now.
