Well after the fermi dissappointment I need to change my plans and I have the following questions as I dont know much about ati cards

-Will the 5850 run cooler and more quiet (especially under load)?
-can i get roughly the same performance with a good overlock?
-do i need to flash the bios to get good overclock?

thanks

it wouldnt seem right if you had an ATi tbh!

:p

i believe the answers you want are yes, yes and no if you get an asus or msi (maybe not all of the msi cards? not sure, but asus cards are unlocked and allow voltage adjustments(

dont worry i'll be keep arguing with ati fanboys

Just to clarify I'm not looking for an upgrade. I need a card that runs cooler, quieter, draws less power, does not rely on sli or crossfire and performs roughly the same(after overclocking).

5850 and overclock it to 5870 speeds which is 100 % guaranteed, then you have a card that matches a 295 in most areas, clock it further and you surpass it.

Oh, well...5870 is a nice move, but a 5970 would be better.

Wait for the refresh IMO.

I'm sure most of them will be out during the first few weeks of April which is when they were expected (When Fermi goes on sale properly)

5870 Super clocked version from Gigabyte is coming out, and also the Eyefinity 6, not sure if there's a 5990 or a 5890.

i would go to a 5870 but not a 5850... it will overclock like a trooper and surpass that of the 295 with ease.

Plus the 5870 has better power management and are very quiet.

5850 under load = 56dB
GTX295 under load = 65dB

So there is definately a difference, but the way everyone percieves noise is different, not to mention the type of noise makes a HUGE difference (ie: whiny fan noise versus air moving).

There's a fair drop in performance from a 295>5850 though. I'd just hold on to the 295 for a while tbh. We are in a bit of a GPU limbo atm, the 5800 cards are great but they are heavily overpriced. I can't really see the prices getting worse, but we'll have to wait and see if they start coming down after a while.

I wouldn't Duran, if you bought an ATI card one of two things would happen.

1) The shockwaves would stop the planet spinning, and cause it to fall out of orbit and into the Sun.

2) You'll spend a month or two trashing ATI drivers because it "doesn't work" when in fact, it's just you missing having an nVidia card.

Please, for the sake of the forum, go buy a GTX470/480.

But he already have an GTX295(671/1115) 16%OC so even if you OC the 5870 the GTX295OC is still a fester card
