i know its a long stretch at the moment, but lets say they both cost the same, and gtx 470 have some sort of cooling solution to solve its heat and noise problem.

do anyone think the extra performance and features (cuda, physiX, etc) of the gtx 470 worth the extra power consumption and potentially still a bit heat?

If they cost the same and you have a cooling solution that keeps it cool and quiet - sure thing. Unless you really don't like paying higher bills.

Nope not by a long stretch. PhysX has to be supported by the game i gather and generally when im playing a game ive never said to myself "this would be so much more awesome if the physics were better!". I blow up a chopper, it hits the ground, that works for me heh, PhysX and these other gimmicky things arent worth it IMO.

I like nvidia i really do their 7900GTO was a great replacement for when my hot noisy x1900xt kicked the bucket, but i wouldnt touch these current fermi cards with a bargepole. The refresh will be much better i imagine.

The GTX470 is similar in pricing to the HD5870 and not the HD5850.

The HD5850 was launched as a £200 to £250 part whereas the GTX470 cards at launch are above £300.

The HD5870 1GB also was launched at around £300 to £350.

to be honest i am tempted to get a hd5850 toxic now for about £250, but it lacks the cuda and other features of nvidia which is something that i need...but i would like a bit more performance at well but i cant pay the full cost of hd5870...arrhhh damn it nvidia! why did they keep us waiting and come up with something so expensive! i hope there is a price drop soon, because they will need it to even sell some of these!

On Newegg the HD5850 1GB is between $280 to $380. The GTX470 is $350 with none in stock.

The HD5850 1GB in most cases can be overclocked to HD5870 1GB clockspeeds and is not that much behind in performance too when both have identical clockspeeds.

I think there is no point in jumping the gun at the moment. In a few months when Nvidia has released their entire range hopefully both companies will price their DX11 parts more competitively and also there should be more stock of the higher performance parts.

If they were both the same price I would pick the 470. However taking all things into account (performance, overclocking, power requirements, heat, noise, cost) I believe the 5850 is the best value "high end" card.

Oveclocking is the big clincher. Most 5850's will go from 725 to 975MHz core and 1000 to 1200 mem very easily. The 470GTX's reviewed so far get nowhere close to this in terms of clocks or actual percentage gains. My ASUS 5850 clocks to 1050core/1300mem @ 1.275v (runs 24/7 @ 1000/1250 1.225v).
