Hi

Since the 5850 seems to be the best performance per watt and cost effective at this time what are the options for after market cooling, any comparisons or pictures around?

currently i have an 8800gt with 120mm strapped onto a heat pipe cooler.

There's rumoured to be a 5850 Vapor-X model in the works, surprising really that there isn't one already...
There's always watercooling, but I'm guessing you're not looking to go down that route? I'll have a browse around and post back if I dig anything up

there aren't that many cheap options, there are several though, but pretty much all require a decent vrm cooler to go with it, meaning at the moment going with a VRM cooler from thermalright which will set you back £15-20 on its own.

I think I might be going with the prolimatech cooler that is SUPPOSED to come with new mounting brackets for new cards in the future, its expensive but if you can move it from one card to the next it might be worth it. Then £15 for a thermalright vrm sink on top of that. THe other option is removing the shroud and sticking a decent fan on top of the sink, thats worked great for me on a 2900xt, 3870x2, 4870x2 and 4890 in the past. Better cooling, silent, cheap(£5 zalmans are very decent fans) and run it at 5 or 7v.

It would seem almost every 3rd party cooler has such poor VRM cooling that VRM temps are some 50-60% higher than with the stock sink.

are the vapor-x units ok at cooling the vrm's? i would expect that the be the best solution surely? just a question of finding stock at a supplier

just one review

And with no fans it still beats the stock cooler

Just waiting for it to come into stock :P

If you look around at more reviews, its the VRM temps that are an issue, core/memory temps are improved, a lot, but VRM temps are through the roof, though mostly just in testing furmark which puts a completely unnatural load on them. I can't find any tests of VRM temps with that cooler, in normal gaming situations, but its SO much higher than the stock sink on the vrm's that its probably not a great idea to overclock high with them.

I think that sink + a thermalright VRM sink is the way to go for "uber" cooling.
