If i was to purchase a new tv (20/22") and it has HDMI input could i use it with a PC with good results, or would i still need to buy one that is designed for PC use and pay the extra???

On the TV or on the PC?
The TV.

PCs can support pretty much any standard resolution out of the box. Even custom resolutions if you define them.

The main thing is the native resolution of the TV. Chances are it's going to be a 1366x768 panel. It's up to you whether or not you'll like that resolution on a 22" panel. Personally I wouldn't like it for actual operating system usage. If you're just going to use it for displaying videos then it'll be perfectly fine.

Surely a 20/22" monitor is going to be far cheaper than any TV of the same size.

Yes but we want a TV in the office/spare room and there isnt space for both monitor and TV.

The PC has HDMI, DVI and analogue outputs so not a problem there.

I would prefer something smaller, 19 or 20" tops but it doesnt seem you can get a decent HD panel in that size, 768px is just too low res on a screen that big!

You could get a freeview box with HDMI output to connect to a monitor via a DVI convertor.
Note that monitors with HDMI inputs are more expensive due to taxes.
