When to expect 5xxx series refresh?

i know progress is progress but ati are onto a good thing, do they really need to start over again ? what if they **** up a bit like nvidia

I'm no expert but I would guess there is only so far you can push each architecture before it is more efficient, or necessary, to do a complete redesign.

Well l wouldn't expect something earth-shuttering from ATI as far as the 5890 is concerned if it ever gets released. If it ever gets released it will be a 5870 with a higher core frequency and maybe 2GB of RAM.

The thing is it wouldn't need to be earth shattering to reclaim the single GPU crown.

They could easily price it at about £380 - £400 and be cheaper and superior to the 480.

They need a new architecture, if you look closely there are problems with the 5 series cards. Like cpu manufactures there is only a certain amount you can do before starting again.

I believe there working on 28nm dies at the moment for 6 series, who knows ATI like to test there new tech before releasing it so maybe the 5890 will be a 28nm part but i doubt it to be honest as they generally like to release there "prototypes" into the middle segment of the market like the 4730 was.
