Hi guys,

Been thinking about an upgrade from my 512bm 4850 card but am not sure what to go for. I've got a budget of around £120, though if I can get something decent for a bit more than I may be able to stretch the wallet.

The main problem I'm facing at present is finding something that won't be held back my other parts of my system (Phenom @ 2.40ghz and 4GB ram). I'm looking in to some cooling (the machine is fairly cool anyway) in order to facilitate a small overclock of the cpu but am wondering how much say, a 5770 would be held back by my current specs.

Cheers!

5770 is not a huge upgrade over the 4850 at all, i would either save the extra for a 5850 or just wait to upgrade later in the year. That's what i'm doing (waiting for ATI/NV refresh that is).

If you feel that your CPU is holding back your system you do realise that the Phenom II will run in many AM2+ motherboards.

Only decent upgrade would be 5850 where you would notice any significant difference, I suggest you wait

Thanks for the replies :).

Processor upgrade seems to be around the same range, though the main purpose of this new gpu would be to offer DX11 support within the games I play. May well hang on for a little while longer, just to see what happens over the coming months. Craving a new piece of kit though :p.

I've just upgraded from a 4850 to 5770 (I was craving a new bit of kit as well)

I'd say its a nice little upgrade if you can sell the 4850 and get a 5770 for a decent price.

BCBF2 framerates went from 20 - 40 (normally hovered around 35) they are now 40+ all the time. This increase may be specific just to BFBC2 though.

:)

I'm also looking into upgrading from a 4850.But since my monitor is only 1680 x 1050 it can still handle anything I throw its way.

More and more often however AA has to be disabled.

what res is that at toM123? im in the same boat and play at 1920x1080, my 4850 is starting to struggle at that res now :(

1680 x 1050

I'm not supprised your struggling at 1920 x 1080 mine was at my res! I'm not too picky about FPS either, but under 25 FPS is very noticable :(

My BFBC2 settings are all on high (I had to use medium with the 4850) 2xAA no bloom or HBAO, it runs very smooth. I can run with more AA to but I can't tell the difference tbh.

All in all i'm very impressed with the little 5770

Depends on what price you can get the 5770 for I sold my 4850 for £45 and got a second hand 5770 for £85.
I wouldn't consider it if you had to pay £110 for a 5770 probably better off getting another 4850 for xfire or even sourcing a cheap 260gtx or 4890.
