Firefox whats the big deal

I've been a long term user of ie and never had any major problems with it and all i hear is people telling me to switch to firefox because its so much faster.

Well i installed it earlier because i heard about an add on that lets you see what time achievements were unlocked on xbox.com that was only for firefox. So i've been using it for a few hours and it seems no faster at all compared to ie8, it seems like its trying to give the illusion of speed because most of the time i'll click a link and it won't do anything for about a second and then load up the page.

So as far as i can tell firefox is the same speed as ie8 but less secure.
 
I prefer FF to IE simply for two reasons

1.. I like the add-ons
2.. I keep my profile on a separate partition and copied to a flash drive. When I ever to re-install I'm back and running with all passwords, bookmarks etc in place. I can even just copy it to my laptop and use it there.
 
You serious?

My top 3 reasons why IE8 still sucks :
1. It isn't standard compliant
2. It takes ages to open a new tab on my XP machine (5+ seconds)
3. It's a RAM hog

It's a vast improvement on earlier versions, but way behind Firefox...

agree with the first, customisability of FF is the best by far, along with the themes many to choose from and probs many more, the download manager is very useful, re-downloading and seeing what you have downloaded. One click bookmarking is a great feature, which i use daily. I moved to FF and never want to move back :)

1. Web designers general consensus is otherwise
2. Opens new tabs very quickly for me - no delay at all. 5 seconds suggests there is a problem with your PC.
3. RAM usage is better than Firefox. Though mostly because it doesn't have tons and tons of add-ons, I guess. Not that RAM usage of a web browser is *ever* a concern for a modern PC.

Poor quality post I'm afraid.
 
The only thing keeping me on Firefox is the massive amount of great extensions - I definitely don't use it for its speed, nor do I consider it particularly fast.

So assuming you're not running with 512mb or RAM what else would your RAM be doing other than sitting empty? How is using available memory a bad thing.

The whole "bloat/uses RAM" thing with Windows and IE being a bad thing has to be one of the most persistent pieces of mis information in IT.

These days FF isn't the quickest browser, or the most secure or lightweight. It does however have some awesome extensions if that's your thing. If you need speed get Chrome (or better still Iron which doesn't have Chromes privacy concerns). For extensions go for FF, for security and least problems with todays web sites go for IE8 in protected mode on Vista or Win7.

There is definitely a lag on my machine, which isn't too slow (Win7, Q6600 at 3.0). It's small, but it is there, and no other browser does it. It's the kind of little annoyance which adds up to a lot.
 
Add-ons mainly, It is faster but tbh the real world difference is negligible, many articles suggest it is slightly more secure. That's about it really. Personally i use it as it has been a lot better than recent IEs and is updated far more regulalry.

Chrome is shown to be faster, has add-ons too and just as secure but something about Google scares the hell out of me!!
 
I still use Firefox because of the addons. However why not try Chrome? It's much faster than Firefox on both my PC and Laptop, but I have to scurry back to Firefox for development work :D.

1. It still doesn't render a lot of CSS sites correctly that work fine in Gecko and webkit based browsers. Said browsers also score much higher on the Acid tests. It's much better than previous IE browsers but still not good enough.
2. Possibly. It's a works dual core laptop with 2GB of RAM. They forced the IE8 upgrade out last week. Maybe I should phone the helpdesk.
3. Not everyone has loads of RAM. We've got loads of machine at work still on 512MB running XP.

Why does that matter for an end user? IE8 isn't that bad standards wise, ok, it doesn't support SVG fonts, but not many sites use that. They don't use it because IE doesn't support it. you can't alienate such a huge part of the marker. Despite not following standard the vast majority of site will display properly.

The difference is marginal, especially is you don't have a million tabs open. Most people won't notice the difference.

Edit: When playing poker, writing a post means you lose your game and takes an age to finish, which makes you look silly :(

lol i went to watch deal or no deal on 4od and you cant even watch 4od on firefox, at least i cant. the play now and play in pop out window buttons wernt even there.
 
I can't use firefox any more after going to Chrome. I just like having more space to view the webpage, because there's less taken up by toolbars and stuff. Plus, now there's addons, so it's not even lacking on that front (although FF still has a LOT more). It also opens and loads stuff faster than FF.

Works fine here. You might need to update your version of Flash.
 
i consider FF to be slow and a bit of a ram hog! if ie is worse than FF then it must be useless, havnt used it since ie5 i think. Played with opera, t

I use FF for the extentions, find it incredibly annoying trying to use another computer now!
 
I love how competition has improved the standard of browers. I use FireFox at work and Chrome at home although I have no issues opening ie8 for the odd page which doesn't work correctly.

Love ad block and other extensions to both browsers and I find ie sluggish opening new tabs, even on high end systems.
