But a 4890 will batter them for £130. He would be better off with a 5770.

If you do get the HD4890 (the place has it for £135.11 so you know where to look) I would get a new PSU. Even if you got an HD5770 1GB I would get a new PSU. EZCool are not very good at all!!

Think I will hold off till I can afford the 5850 as dont think 4890 is future proof enough as its dx10

Just bought the corsair 650 modular how long if i did get the 5850 will it play games on high on my 1600 by 1000 screen

A while
Considering most games which are coming out soon will be based on existing engines (which we know the 5850 can handle well) then you should be able to play all these games fine. For games with new engines then things are less certain, but the 5850 is a very powerful card so its got a good chance of handling them well.
If I had to put a number on how long it will take for the card to show its age and not give super performance in contemporary games - I would guess 2 years.
