i recently replaced my psu with a HX850 and gave my old HX620 to a friend of mine
he just phoned me to say that when he powered it on he got a white flash from the psu and a loud bang

last time i used the psu it was working fine and that was only a couple of months ago, i had it powering a e8600 and a gtx295

he is (was trying to?) use it to power a e6500 and a old pci graphics card (not pci express) so i have no idea what could have caused it do do this
i have told him not to use it

any ideas what could cause a psu to do this? did i replace it with the 850 just in time? :p

i just saw some mention of that on other forums so ill ask him when he phones again
its really weird that it could do this when it was perfect before
he knows his stuff when it comes to building a pc too as he used to put my systems together for me when i was too scared to do it myself :p

the only thing i can think of is that maybe the switch was moved taking it in and out of the box by accident

HX620 doesn't have a voltage switch, it should be auto switching.

Sounds like it's just plain failed, I've had two fail so it's not uncommon. They rarely do any damage to other components though, so you should be OK. If you have the receipt, they come with a 5-year warranty. However, you have to return the unit to the Netherlands, which is costly, though cheaper than a new one.

ahh ok :)
well i just spoke to him again and im starting to think that it was doing that when i used it
i used to hear a pop from what i thought was the speakers when i would power on my pc and he said that its almost exactly what it sounds like

since i got my new psu i havent been hearing it but i just didnt notice it before now
is there any way that the psu could be powering a system and doing that?

Yes, I had exactly the same popping issue with both my HX620's. Corsair will approve an RMA, and it may well work perfectly, though one of mine died not long after it started popping.

I didn't need a receipt when I RMA'd my HX520. All Corsairs RMA department wanted was who I bought it from & the date of purchase.

This. Use parcel2go and find the cheapest insured/tracked delivery. I bought a faulty hx620 for £15, paid £14 for RMA and within a week had a shiny new one ;)

My HX620 blew quite recently, was still in warranty so I sent it back to them (expensive to courier to the Netherlands though =/) and got a HX650 Professional Series PSU back with 7 year warrenty back, so overall quite happy :)

so you dont just send it back to retailer you have to send back to netherlands?

AFAIK the retailer is responsible for the 1st 12 months for whatever PSU you buy. If you choose to buy the PSU from OCUK send them a webnote to confirm this. After the 1st 12 months the supplier is responsible for whatever warranty is offered, be it an extra 1,2,3,4,6 years etc.

yep im pretty sure its just 12months with the retailer unless they offer extended warranty
ill let him worry about sending it off for a replacement as it didnt cost him anything ;)
