Engine Doesn't Rev Beyond 5400RPM

Either intake or fuel, check the intake filter could be blocked reducing air flow or could be fuel pump blocked with crap from people running car till empty sucking crap into the damn thing

:p where does the tank drain from when full?.....the same place as when almost empty.

I'd be getting it plugged in instead of clutching at straws... even if no engine light is on, theres prob loads of codes stored. I'd put it down to some kinda ECU issue myself.

I had a similar issue to the OP but with a different vehicle. Sluggish performace and did not rev at all anywhere near the redline. I suspected the CAT breaking up so took it to the dealer who confirmed this. Trouble was initially they were not convinced as usually CAT break up throws an EML code. Also I had no strange noises from the car at all.

The cambelt was changed 25,000 miles ago.

Biggles suggested that if the timing was out, I'd hear a popping sound near the air intake area, however there's no popping sound on mine. Plus it's an intermittent problem - if the timing was out, then would it be more of a constant problem?

Likewise for the cat, would it be more of a constant problem if the cat was well past it, and not an intermittent problem?

If this helps, it does ever so slightly shake/misfire when idling sometimes, and when I mean ever so slightly, you need to pay special attention to notice it. Would this swing it more towards some sort of plug/coil/ignition problem?

Will get it scanned for faults next week. Hopefully a fault is flagged up, as I don't want to go through a process of fitting elimination!

Valve timing, yes.

Ignition timing wouldn't necessarily make a popping and could be intermittent.

It certainly wouldn't rev if it was way retarded.

I think I have a good enough picture of what may be causing the problem now, cheers chaps.

Will be going to my VAG Specialist sometime this week, I assume if no faults come up, then he can test the ignition timing/spark plugs/coils individually to see whether it's at fault?

That's not uncommon with this engine. Cleaning out the throttle body usually helps. I wouldn't unduly worry about it.

Did it have a cam belt or has it had one recently?
I bought a golf Gti with the 8v engine, Had a timing belt fitted by some idiot. The timing was a tooth out on the aux drive for the dizzy and this caused the very same sysmptoms your describing.

Sorry just read the rest of the topic. You will not always get a popping my golf ran perfect except it would hit the limiter at around 5,000 or maybe higher cant remember now.
Reading your later posts then i would maybe ignore the timing issue.

Might be spark plugs/ ignition components.

The spark will find the easiest path of resistance, if there is an intermittant problem then it could be due to damp weather.

Also cylinder pressure may mean the spark isnt powerful to ignite at high revs (less charge time) in the higher gears. In first gear and idle you will have less load on the engine and lower cylinder pressures)

Bit of a long shot but may not be mechanical at all...

Have you checked that your car mat is not slipping forwards and going up underneath your accelerator pedal? My MK4 Gti used to do this all the time as one of the mat pins/plugs had broken and the mat would come forward giving me similar syptoms and resrticting the pedal going all the way down in effect giving me a lower rev limit and the feeling of reduced power.

You never know, sometimes it's the simple things.

I've got the car booked in at a vag specialist next week.

Will find out then guys. So far, what I've told him is that you guys have suggested spark plugs/coils/ignition components/timing. He'll get it fault scanned, and hopefully will find the cause.

And again, nope it's not air intake related, as my air filter was clean, and there were no blockages. It's not the mat either, as I've got the vw oem mats which clip into place, and don't go as far as the gas pedal 'stop'.

Had the car scanned for faults today and only one fault came up again and again, even though it was cleared several times.

00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40): Implausible Signal

Even though this was the only fault that came up, my mechanic isn't 100% sure if this is the cause of my problem.

Ross-Tech Wiki says:

Possible Causes
* Camshaft Timing Out of Specification
* Wiring to Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40) faulty
* Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40) faulty
* Engine Control Module faulty

Possible Solutions
* Check Camshaft Timing
* Check Wiring to Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
* Check/Replace Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
* Check/Replace Engine Control Module

What do you guys think?
