Worth posting interesting stories if you don't have proof?

As we all know, there are a lot of cynics on t'net.

If you have a really interesting crazy thing that happened to you, but you have no proof whatsoever about the event happening, should you bother posting the event for people to enjoy and discuss?

What should you answer to the usual people immediately saying 'That is BS I don't believe you, you are a LIAR'? Just ignore them, or try and persuade them, or not do the thread?



For example this weekend someone stole my jacket, I found the jacket hidden in the nightclub and took it back. The thief accidentally left their mobile phone in the jacket pocket with stored numbers like 'Mum' and 'Jackie' and stored text messages etc, and I could do a 'what would you do with the info?' thread (quite interesting, would even type out the text messages on his phone for the lolz - he sounds like a *****!). But I don't want to spend 6 pages pointlessly trying to persuade people it actually happened I can't be bothered :\ Create thread? Or create yet another 'Spec me a meal for tonight' thread instead?


It's basically a 'how do you deal with cynics' thread?
 
It usually depends on the person telling the story. You would not for example, tend to see the wolves closing in on older members who don't tend to be fantastical as a norm. Posters who however, tend to talk crap often, get their due.
 
It depends on the story, what you said sounds entirely plausible, it's mostly only the "I saved a hundred people from death because I'm awesome" threads that people tend to call out.
 
One thing about the people on here is that no matter how believable the story is, there will always be someone who says it's fake and wants proof. Probably someone who will say the proof is fake too. :p
 
There are always skeptics about everything. If you have a story that's interesting, post it. Some will be amused, others won't. That's just the way of life. Just don't be alarmed and offended by those who are persistently skeptical.

Some stories like invading ant farms are just outrageous, though. :p :D

There's only 3 real cynics on here TBH. I end up just presuming nothing that amazing happens to them IRL, so rather then question why, they presume other people (plenty here) that mental stuff does happen to (usual under the influence of far too much beer!) must be lying to try and appear cool..!

:( I feel a bit bad for them really. :/ To get really deep, I think it's kind of a self-defence mechanism. If nowt interesting really happened to me ever, I'd find it easiest to justify to myself the way it's all going by persuading myself everyone else was the same as well .. and just lying about 'cool times and wild crimes'. As I said, I do feel a bit bad for them.

You could always make another "look at me" thread instead rather than carry on the conversation in the current "look at me" thread. If you were the sort of person that makes "look at me" threads obviously. Which I am not saying you are, just working on hypotheticals here.
 
I' ma cynic as on average people are proved wrong more often than they are proved right.

when i buy a lottery ticket it would be wonderful to win but i buy it with the expectation of losing.


People on the internet posting fanciful things makes no difference to me either way but i take into account what has happened before.

Ie if magick posts he;s been contacted by an alien telling him to put it all on black.

I won't believe it.
 
Most outrageous tales are boring/crap without photos, there's just no point.

Like the antfarm one, it was a funny story but would be so much better if people could actually see it.
 
Nobody has ever questioned any of my stories, no matter how unbelievable they have sounded :(
 
I'd go with a slightly unrelated piece of advice from Hannah Whitall Smith "The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right.".

If it happened to you then that should be good enough for you, what does it matter whether anyone else believes you? Does their disbelief in some way negate that it happened to you? If you feel that you require the approbation of people in some way then providing proof for claims that are prima facie difficult to credit would seem to be a good idea. It's entirely up to you though, for myself I wouldn't be terribly concerned about being questioned over something I had done or that had happened to me but people are different.
