I am just setting up my new system, unfortunately the motherboard bios does not seem to be recognising all my memory.

I have:

intel i7 930
gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r
patriot viper 6gb ddr3 pc3-12800c8 (1600mhz) low latency tri-channel (pvt36g1600LLK)

when I am in the motherboard bios only 4gb is recognised.

In windows it states that 6gb is installed but only 4gb recognised, does anoyone know what might be the problem here?

Happens with my board all the time.

Need to re-seat the memory and boot untill it recognises it.

There might be a known issue with ur board like there is for mine, and perhaps even a bios flash fix.

Check to see if the bios has any options for remapping memory / memory hole etc, try both settings if there is one... If there are no settings, try reseating the memory, and if that doesnt work you can try reseating the CPU too.

You could try running the memory at lower than its rated speed, to see if that allows the ram to be stable enough for the i7's memory controller to make use of it too. Sometimes a bios flash will be available to fix it.

Damaged pins in the LGA socket can also cause this problem.

Also try the memory modules one at a time. I have a similar issue at the moment (4.00gb (2.00gb Useable)) - By doing one at a time the pc would not boot with just one particular module. Its worth a try? ;)

I tried reseating the memory a few times, after a few attempts with no real logic to why it was or wasn't working the motherboard has magically began to recognise all 6.

Fingers crossed it stays that way!

EdwardTeach have you had any other probs with your config?

I am pretty much in the the process of putting a spec together similar to yours

Again, my board does the same.

Few re-seats and it detects it.

Very parculier..

Check that no pins are bent for the CPU on the motherboard. I had this issue after reseating my processor, all of a sudden it would only recognise 4GB, and every now and then 6GB. I took out the processor again, and saw that 1 pin was ever so slightly bent. I put it back in position, and it worked fine again, and has worked ever since.

Inserting ram does flex the board very slightly, potentially that could change the pressure/contact on the CPU very slightly.. enough to allow the missing channel to be stable again. Still, quoting an old saying.. If its not broke, dont fix it :) Grats.

I had the same issues with Asus P6T Deluxe and G-Skill Trident,I7 920.
getting intermitant amounts of memory, cold boot would show 4gig reboot and you would get 6gig, spent months trouble shooting this and had 3 new boards from Asus still the same, tested my memory and each stick worked fine on their own no issue, RMA memory back to G-Skill as i had no options left to me and got a new set, no issues since, problem was that memory wouldnt work correctly as a triple pack but on their own they worked fine.

New memory fixed my issues with missing sticks, spent about 4months trying everything.not had one problem since and i have been able to overclock further as well I7 running at 4ghz memory 1600 (7-7-7-20) so all good.:D
