Is it even possible?

I want to buy or rent a car during easter. If I buy a cheap car, I just want to get some temporary insurance for a couple of weeks.

But all companies only allow over 21s or over 25s!

Surely there must be something an 18 year old can do for some short term fun? :(

If you have any recommendations then please let me know.

Thanks.

Will I have to sell the car first to cancel the policy?

I'm thinking of keeping the car for a few months until I get my student loan and can get a years insurance.

Am I allowed to keep the car parked in front of my house without insurance? It will have tax and mot.

This is why you'll find it hard.

Why spend student loan on car insurance? Isn't it to fund your studies?

Are students so rich, or motoring so cheap now, that running a car is affordable?
Wasn't so in my day! :p

On the road? No, on private land, yes.
Well there goes my plan, straight out the window.

Man it's hard to drive a car legally at 18 unless you have rich parents or have won the lottery. :(

Oh well, I'll wait till I'm 25 years old or something. I'll probably have completely forgotten how to drive by then.

Not really, just get a job?

In fairness, it's still a hell of a challenge. I had a job around my studies at 17/18 and there is still no way I could have afforded the quotes.

I took a year out between A levels and Uni, and worked full time, saving as much as I could. That plus working part time whilst at uni mean that I could afford to run a car quite comfortably.

Certainly wasn't challenging.

My student loan combined with my grant doesn't even pay for the cheapest accomodation I can get my hands on. And my parents aren't exactly rich.
I do know one kid actually getting enough that he doesn't need savings or a job, but both his parents are unemployed so obviously, full grant and loan.

See if you can borrow a car for a few weeks? Go on as a named driver.

Not challenging, I'm working two jobs alongside college at the moment. Worked alongside studies since 16, 13 if you count 2 paper rounds. Working alongside studies next year. You just need a decent amount of hours, and not be afraid of early mornings working before college, or even nights.

I don't struggle to pay car insurance or run a car, I struggle to stick any money in my uni fund though, only managing about £200 a month at the moment.

move to an area where not everyone is out to stab you, problem solved. :p

It's asim18, the colour winkie guy, wherever he is, people will try and stab him. :p

Not really. I worked 16-19 and had a car at 17 and insured it at 17 quite easily. Don't spend your money on much else and it's easy.

I don't understand all this saying its so hard, I worked 15 hours a week during my first year of college, made enough money for driving lessons and test, then I worked through the summer full time - made enough to buy and insure a car then passed my test that September. Bought my car with tax and test and had enough money to put some petrol in it every week.

Peugeot 306 1.6 - £500
Direct Line Insurance - £1700 (that hurt, was all summers money almost)
Did about 35-38 Mpg

Now I am at Uni, still working 14 hours a week (min wage :( ) and have just bought a new car , and still live an ok lifestyle. It just takes some hard work in my opinion, that and you have to really want it.

Nope, it still isn't - especially when studying in London. Student loan doesn't even cover accommodation costs. My course is also extremely tough compared to others, so there's literally no time for a part-time job. My parents are of the opinion that spending money on education is far more useful than on other stuff - which is why they paid for my driving lessons and test, rather than for a car.

To the OP, don't worry, you'll never forget how to drive - it's something that stays with you for life. I'm personally happy to wait till I'm working a well-paid full-time job so I can drive a nice car instead of some old bucket of bolts. :p Plus insurance will be a heck of a lot cheaper.
