Hey guys I have just bought a 9700 and am off abroad for a week, i'm wondering if there is anyway I can have data roaming on but only to send/receive blackberry messenger? ie to essentially block email and other web data?

Thanks

From what i have read and understood there are a couple of ways of doing this

One is to set up a filter on your email account...can be done by logging onto your network BIS webpage:

Best way to do this is to just create a filter to disable any email sent to you.
Go to your inbox - select Options - Email Filters and say:

If no filters apply, send email to handheld: NO

Or you could disable all emails via the devices firewall ie

1.In the device options, click Security Options.
2.Click Firewall.
3.Select the check box beside one or more message types.
4.Press the Menu key.
5.Click Save.

Thats the easiest way to do it.

Id check to see if these options work before trying them as they arent guaranteed to work 110%....only other way to do it is to delete the email account from the device but then you will lose any saved emails on the device.

Of course it does as you will roaming unless you turn it off then you wont be able to send or receive messages but unlike emails...BBM data is usually kb's but can work up to mb's if your sending messages back and forth a lot and sending pics etc.

Is the BB phone available on any other handsets e.g. symbian?

No and thankfully never will be although rumours are that BBM might be opened to other platforms...which i really really hope doesnt happen...its the one thing that makes BB's more addictive.

Spawn, thanks for that, I think I may just delete the email accounts and add them back on, I don't mind losing the saved messages as they are all hosted on the server anyway.

Once email has gone, is there any other data being pushed to certain applications?

If i'm just sending a couple of messages a day via bbm how many kb do you reckon i'm using?

Also if you can spawn, are there any apps or ways I can monitor how much data is being sent/received?

Depends if the other apps you have use data to get their info ie weather apps and such like. But if you havent got any 3rd party apps then you shouldnt get any data pushed or pulled to your device.

A couple of messages on BBM usually takes up 10 kbs etc...depends on how long your messages are really...but shouldnt be more than a few mbs at worst.

As for data monitoring apps??...there are a few but i wouldnt explicitly trust them tbh....i dont use any as i have unlimited data but when im abroad i tend to turn off my data connection ie no roaming.

Try this one: http://www.ehnert.net/MiniMoni/index.html

I cant guarantee that it will work properly.
