Need Advice - Wrong Fuel

I know, yet I have no idea how people get it so wrong. I mean apart from anything else there is usually a nice big label to tell you want to put in it in most modern cars :p ...but even that shouldn't be needed on people's own cars ...I can understand it on a hire/courtesy car though ...especially as some of the very new 4 cylinder petrol engines now sound amazingly like diesels.

Innattention basically, there is a very large percentage of the population who just have no ability or desire to pay attention to what they are doing, some of the stuff that happens on our forecourt is frankly shocking, you end up wishing that the Police had a permanent presence and had the power to ban people on the spot.

It's not like he was on a hilltop sniping people filling up! Accidently filling up with the wrong fuel and pushing it out the way doesnt sound shocking and worthy of some sort of ban? Not a perma anyway -maybe a suspension for a couple of days.

The punishment for this crime already exists. A hefty bill if it is ran with the wrong fuel in.

Everybody makes mistakes, if you claim you do not, then you are lieing :p

Erm, you might want to re-read my post, I wasn't saying that filling up with the wrong fuel should come with a ban, but some of the other stuff that I've seen happen should.

I did it in a company car, i had been driving diesels mainly for about 5 years but just got the wife a petrol car - night before 'the incident' i filled wifes car up, on the way to station i was chanting 'petrol, petrol, petrol'

You can guess what happened next morning on way to work ....

I even complained that i had spilt petrol on my shoes as it overflowed !! I drove it about 1/4 mile before realising - being a company car it was towed to garage and flushed and after that was fine !!

i would just add to this discussion and say that you shouldn't even turn on the ignition. on most cars this will prime the in tank pump (if it has one) and start sending petrol through your pipes, and make it a bigger job to clean out.
