Value Polarising Filter for 400D : What would you suggest?

Dear photography gurus,

I'm keen to get my hands on a decent Polarising filter for my 400D, probably for a 50mm 1.8 lens (filter diameter 55mm) but don't want to pay through the nose for it.

This is pretty much as short and sweet as it gets. What would you suggest? Unlike lenses and cameras, I can't find a huge resource base on the web - is that to say they're not so different?

There are big differences, its just like buying a camera lens.

The best models are noticeably better and much more expensive.
A decent CPL wont be cheap. Value for money will depend on how much you value quality.

I would also buy a CPL for your largest lens filter (probably 77mm), and use step down adapters.Then you only buy once.

I've tried some Hoysas but they were very poor with a colour cast and broke very quickly. Since then I only buy B+W MRC filters and have never had issues.
 
There can be a fair difference both in quality and price between the various brands so picking the right compromise can be tricky.

Hoya have a decent name but can be on the pricey side however they have a sister brand which is basically the same stuff under a different name, ostensibly for the Japanese market but you can get them over here or on eBay. The brand name escapes me but I'm pretty sure it starts with a K.

Is it a Canon 50mm f/1.8 mk II you have? If so, the filter size is 52mm. That said, I do agree that buying larger and using a step down ring would be a sensible option.

There is a well known photography shop in Norwich (near to Asda) that may be useful to you :) Not sure if I can mention the name or not for fear of advertising a competitor (email in trust though ;)).
 
I have 1 B+W and the rest are Hoya. The Hoya work great, the B+W was a present and pretty expensive compared to the Hoyas but i don't see any benefitss to the extra price.
