Hello,

I am about to order a new PC and these are the components I have chosen. It is a general purpose PC for FPSs, photoshop, browsing, etc. although I would not like to do a major overhaul (read: anything more than upgrading the graphics card) in the next few years. If anyone could suggest any changes or anywhere I could save a few £s I would be very appreciative :)

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £210

Thermalright Venomous X CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1156 / 1366) £47

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard - £155

OCZ Obsidian 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600Mhz Triple Channel Kit £140

Asus 1024MB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD5850 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort, PCI-E Retail £225

Coolermaster ATCS 840 Classic Case - Black £154

Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750HXUK) £123

Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (SSDSA2MH080G2C1) £190

Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan (2 for CPU cooler, 2 for case) - £14 x4 = £56 - anything else quiet but a bit cheaper?

Plus 2 WD Black drives from an old build & auzentech x-meridian

total = £1300 :(

edit: plus a Samsung SH-B083L/BSBP 8x BluRay ROM / 16x DVD±RW Drive - Black (OEM) £77 which means £1377

Nice case- I got one.

ANTEC new truepower 750w psu is cheaper £94.99

The titan fenrir cooler is £32.99

Edit. Where you going to put the case fans? Doesn't need it.

The case has a spare fan mount in the floor with a filter, there's one on the harddrive rack and there is a external plastic box which helps the graphics card which has a mount.

Still don't need any of that.

Thanks for the advice - I read the cooling could be improved in the case with a bit better intake of air since it is currently a negative pressure case. I will trust you though that I don't need them since you already have one ;)

Will the fenrir still let me hit 4Ghz + and not be too noisy?

Not sure about the fenrir at 4ghz, I just know everyone on these forums can't praise it high enough.

Its almost become a standard response! LOL.

P.S I have the 650w ANTEC new truepower, its cables to the motherboard are long enough for the case, including the 8pin ATX at the top of the motherboard.

All the other cables are well long enough.

That psu is not worthy of being placed into that system and case.

And I don't think the motherboard ATX cables are long enough

Thanks for all the comments. I was aware the PSU might be a little overpowered for the system but my intent was to future proof it for the next gen of graphics cards should it need upgrading (ATIs northern islands or nvidias fermi 2) or perhaps for sli/xfire.

Other than the PSU/fans can I assume the rest of the choices are relatively sensible with little else that can be trimmed?

Fitted my dads system together yesterday with corsair 750psu and atcs 840 case, the 24 pin motherboard fits/ reaches fine just needed an extender for the cpu supply but the case comes with one anyway.:)

My antec needed no extension:p

Would it be worth splashing out an extra 100 saved from the other parts and go for a 5870 and then overclock it even further than a 5850? I am coming from a [email protected] and 260gtx and if the 5850 isn't "night and day" better, then I will be a little disappointed...
