Catalyst Opengl 4.0 drivers, V2!

Not that great, they all seem bugged recently.

None of them are official though baring the proper catalyst 10.3 and even then they gave you a direct choice between that WHQL tested one and the beta ones released at the same time. Its good that we get to test these asap as they often contain optimisations for the latest games which can sort out problems and give really nice FPS improvements.

I'd rather have a choice of drivers with a few bugs in each then 1 driver every 2/3 months which still has bugs in it anyway

Was that a pot shot at nVidia? :D

including beta (but not including the GPU melting drivers) they've released:

3x March 2010 (including one very good driver)
2x Jan 2010
1x Dec 2009
1x Nov 2009
2x Oct 2009

And pretty much every major game release has been supported before or by release date.

It wasn't actually lol. Was simply saying having something more frequently which tend to work quite well and give you a choice is better than having fewer with similar problems.

Noticed a bug with these whilst playing universe at war. The cursor started to scramble after about 30 mins play then when I went out of the game it continued into windows. Had to restart to get rid of it. Just put another 2 hours playtime onto the game with the 10.3b cats and didn't get this problem.

So would appear these have a problem with 2D (cursors) so beware lol. Didn't overheat or anything either as the card temps where at 65C so plenty of headroom there and I can play other more demanding games for far longer with no visual distruptions.

My verdict on these ones, avoid

wonder if there will be any improvements in metro 2033? not that it runs that badly. just would be nice if they got DOF working without a catastrophic perfromance drop xD

D3D driver is same as 10.3b, OpenGL is obviously newer.

yeah its the same d3d file but a 9835 or something OGL which is a lot higher in vnumber then the 10.3b ones.

It seems to break a lot of older opengl games though and isn't fully implemented so if you play quake 3 etc still, your not going to like the results. If you HAVE to use these drivers (no idea why like but yeah) then get rivatuner to lock the opengl version at 1.4 when you play older games and you get rid of the problems that way.

There are metro 2033 optimisations in these and the slightly older opengl 4.0 set which do make the gameplay smooth, however they still dont give you acceptable framerates with DOF and Tess enabled together. You can get away with tess though at very high dx11 at 1920x1080 IF your willing to have a framerate drop in areas of extreme volumetric fog, although it doesn't seem to slow down on fights which is pretty good. However, with it enabled or not, I can't actually see a difference :D

indeed, i play a fair bit of enemy territory which uses the Q3 engine and the results wer unplayable on most maps
