GTX 480

Speaking as an ex Voodoo user this all sounds familiar.

Could it get any worse ? - is this a repeat of the 3DFX saga ?

The amount of slagging off GTX 480 gets is insane. It's no where near as bad as people make out, the only downside is its expensive and uses a lot of power.

Right, so it's only horribly expensive and only distgustingly power-hungry and hot. Yeah, minor issues those. Even if it does do better in some benchmarks, which it bloody should, it is still a terrible architecture.

All the reviews I have seen thus far put 4xx nowhere near far enough ahead of its OWN predecessors to make it worth the money. Kudos to anyone crazy enough to get one for just Folding.

A bit like the entire news network of the world then?

That was pretty much my point, but thanks for reiterating it! :D:p

Oh dear, new Afterburner 1.6.0 Beta is out. Shows that on the 4xx series the core clock is locked as a multi of the shader clocks and you can't change the memory speed. :(

Of course they don't want you messing with the clocks. One tweak in the wrong direction and it will probably explode!:D

The jokes aside Fermi really is nothing special. In my eyes all it does is highlight how good the 5870+ and GTX200s really are! :)

I think its got potential, probably a revised smaller/cooler process maybe as a GTX460 or GTX475 in a few months time will be awesome.

I imagine that they will wait till the get to 28nm before doing a GTX495 based on two GTX475's on one PCB which will be the new GTX295 with double the performance and similar power/heat.

You will see 20K PPD just before it opens up a worm hole into a new dimension. Then annihilates the world!

I really want one but really don't, i need a Dx11 GPU but still would like to keep my folding PPD up to a decent standard, when stocks are a bit better i might, might get one just for the lol's, worm holes and melted side panel's galore :D

Still gonna wait for loudbobs benches then go from there or wait till GPU3 is out then I can use ATI again maybe

The only good thing to come of the GTX400s is the distinct possibility that there will be many cheap GTX200s floating about :D

Once I get the cards (hopefully, without too much delay).

I shall post benchie's based on WinXP & Win7.

Will try to compare with GTX260 on all aspects....

Using Unigines Updated Tests, SETI, Milkyway & F@H (will try to fit in 3DMark Vantage too - on Win7).

Will compare single card to single card, GTX480's in SLI and if the PSU is upto it GTX480's SLI'd with GTX260 for physx.

The only let down will be that the brains behind it will be a Q6600 oc'd to 3.2Ghz, 4Gig Ram @ 800Mhz and a MSI P7N Platinum Motherboard.

Hope thats enuff for ya.

Because when I build the i7 rig, I'm gonna buy all the parts at once......

Total rig cost atm is: £6000 (approx)

As I don't qiute have that much available...I gotta wait

:D

i.e.

Windows7 Ultimate
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7
12Gb Dominator GT @ 2000Mhz
3xGTX480's
2xCrucial Real SSD C300 256GB (Raid 0 - Operating System Drive)
Western DigitalBlue 500GB (Back-Up OS Drive)
4xSeagate Barracuda LPP 2TB SATA II (Raid 5)
Thermaltake 1500w PSU
Pioneer BDR-205 12x Blu-Ray Writer
Sony Optiarc AD-7240 24x DVD Writer
Creative Soundblaster Xi-Fi Titanium
Water-Cooling to suit.

Why buy all at once? Just get the CPU/RAM/Mobo and reuse what you have got. Sell the rest to make up a bit of the cost. Then get the juicy upgrades later.

The thought had crossed my mind, but......

I like to do things all at once.......

Once I start, I don't stop....no matter how long it takes.

Mind you, I've been itching to do it for some time now, so maybe when the Gulftown become more widely available and when things settle with Fermi i.e. around July/Agust.

I know how you feel. Just seems a shame to have those mahoosive cards in there without the cpu to drive them :)

That will be an insane rig if/when you finally build it!

I wish I could justify 6 grand in one go! [read: I wish I had 6 grand!] :p

I think even if I had the money I wouldn't spend it all on an insane machine, I'm too much of a scrooge, I hate watching things depreciate.

2nd hand / year old tech all the way for me! :p
