Southern Hampshire Meet 27 March 2010 ** PICTURES **

Good and bad news, something in my exhaust just split (I think it's around my right manifold but it's hard to tell in the dark by listening), somewhere infront of the cats when I was on my way home, the good part is my car sounds absolutely epic now, it is louder than Burnsey's Camaro :D ...it sounds utterly beastly, I will try and do a recording tomorrow. Still, can't really leave it like that I suppose, it's so loud it's pretty antisocial.

When the car is revving much under 1900rpm and your driving without much load on the engine it just burbles right now, not unpleasant at all actually and when you put your foot down a bit and it drops a cog (didn't try kickdown I'd have been arrested for noise pollution) it sounds insane, think proper muscle car with straight through exhaust sort of sound. I think it's blowing a load of exhaust gases out not far past the manifolds ...so you can imagine what that's like on a V8.

A little part of me wants to leave this now, as a ***** exhaust mod :p

replace using a second hand part then get saving asap for a sports catback system to free up the V8 roar ?

I dunno, I think once you've gone open headers (which is essentially what I've unintentionally done here) it's hard to go back, every catback I have heard on a BMW has been quiet and tame compared to what I have now, then nearest thing I can find to it ...and I will record it tomorrow anyway so you can all hear it is this stang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNEeBPadQiQ&feature=player_embedded ....it is seriously loud.

Oh actually it sounds just like this BMW with open headers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRPUJD0QiMo&feature=related :D

depends on the construction of the OE exhaust

but the V8 can be made stupid loud by removing the silencers under the car. There are two rows of silencers, and two lots of cats. You can remove one of the row of silencers and one row of the cats and when combined with a catback exhaust is crazy loud. Observe

I was going to say that catback exhaust example you linked sounds a bit limp-wristed and ...wailsome, more like a Ferrari than the deep American muscle sound I like ...but then I realise at the end it's a V8 M3 ...both the M5/M6 and M3 V8/10 engines sound a bit rubbish imo, too high and metallic ...I doubt mine would sound like that with a catback system ...i expect mine would be deeper and less harsh sounding.

I love the low and very deep slightly offbeat burble myself.

:D

Don't fix it :D

Or fix it, then get a fruiter exhaust :D

Reminds me of a mini meet in Oxford last year and Alllec had an Omega V6 with a split in the exhaust quite near the front, it sounded like a touring car of some sort :D

Recording please ;)
