Gaming Headphones

This again. :o

I'm still undecided on what to get.

Game have got the new Turtle Beach X11's in stock for £50. I hear the X1's are pretty good, Does anybody have anything to offer on the X1's?

Should I bother? Should I just stump up another £100 and get the X41's still?

Whay am I so indecisive?

hmm does your tv have a 3.5mm headphone jack?

If it does then avoid the Turtle Beach's. The X1 sounds like a £15 set of headphones to me and definitely aren't worth it. I suggest picking up a decent set of headphones (There are some very nice goldring's to be had for £50, but I can't link) and wearing the mic around your neck, that's what I do.

As a rule of thumb for me, "gaming" headphones aren't worth it until you're talking about ones with actual features beyond a boom mic and headphones, i.e. surround sound and chat boost, but even then dolby headphone mixamp's aren't too hard to find and gaming headsets never offer the sound quality of a similairly priced set of headphones.

Plus nobody has realised normal headphones are better sound quality than the Turtle Beach's, and so still complain about TB's, but stop when I say I'm just using normal headphone, which to them are automatically inferior. Ahh its fun toying with ignorance :D

Also with the headphone route, the upgrade path is cheaper as well, as to get a surround setup you just need to buy a mixamp, rather than a whole new setup, and you can buy the setup in parts, rather than buying a £100 headset which you may find you don't need or that you want to replace with a better one very soon.

I was ideally looking for a complete solution that would give me a headset/mic combo. Hence why I chose the X11's and I was toying with the idea of spoiling myself and getting the X41's which have the surround sound feature.

So many things to think about.

Admittedly I'm no expert, but every time I've seen a set of gaming headphones reviewed by the pro-audio people, they tend to slate them as being pants.

i have the turtle beach X1 and they are great for sitting on a beanbag in front of my TV shooting people on call of duty and calling Oneshot a lardy pants

Cool, can you hear all the little details on them? Such as people walking around, reloading, etc etc? Like the X41 blurb claims ( I suspect they leave it out to push the X41's).

Get the X1's, these own so bad and are a fraction of the price of the wireless versions and IMO much better.

Yeah you can hear almost everything, you will hear things you never knew were in the game! You hear everything!

they are much better than my 5.1 surround sound through the A/V amp for hearing the little details an being able to pinpoint them. the best bit is you can t hear your misses moaning that you spend more time on COD than with her :)

I ended up getting a set of the Sharkoons It was either then or the X41's but I head too many stories about interference being an issue.

I've got the X1s and I'll vouch for them too. Theres a few wires but having control over game vs voice chat in the one set of headphones is great. Mic quality seems decent from what my friends have said, so no complaints there. They're comfy and block out quite a bit of external noise. The built in bass-boost is quite nice too. The sound seems a little "mid-scooped" but no overly so, and you quickly get used to it.

Worth it if you don't want to spend loads on a set.

If you haven't bought them already, you may want to make sure that the rampant supporters of turtle beach's haven't tried playing with other headsets.

I play with Goldring NS1000's and a Pyramat S2000 doing the bass, I tried playing with a friends set of X1's and (ignoring the sound rocker) they were the same price, and the X1's sounded terrible. The looked and felt cheap, the bass was very grating, the sound was often muffled and low in detail and the huge mass of wires was very hard to deal with.

Having used both I can only say avoid gaming headphones, just because they say gaming doesn't meant they're the best option for gaming, just that gaming is the best option for them.

If you want a semi all in one setup, you could look into the Mad Catz throat communicator? just have the throat mic and leave the headphones out?

I'm not after a semi all in one set-up, I am after an all in one headet/mic combo hence why these types of headphones are the ones I'm looking at. I am well aware of the quality I can get by buying a decent set of other headphones, I just don't want the hassle of having the mic dangled round my neck or in any other fanciful configuration.

Yes the mass of cables could be pain, but no less wires than going for a dedicated set of phones and then a mic wire as well.

I do appreciate the input though.

Then if you're going with gaming headphones, I suggest either the TB X31's, as they are infinitely more practical, have decent sound quality, chatboost, bass boost, stereo widening etc. which the x11's lack, the x11's ultimately just being cheap headphones with a boom mic, whereas the X31's having some gaming specific features.

If you don't want to be spending the money on getting a wireless headset then I say go with the Tritton AX180's, I've heard pretty good reports on them.

I have the X1's and I can vouch that they are very good indeed. However, last week I purchased the Astro A40's and mixamp and these are absolutely awesome. The major selling point for me other than the 5.1 and integrated mic was the fact that I can use them both for the 360 and the PS3. ;)

With all these people vouching, please verify that you have tried other setups around the same price?

I was distinctly unimpressed when I tried the X1's after using my headphones, and I don't know how many of you guys who are saying X1's are awesome have tried and considered the alternatives (A40 vs X1 comparison is hardly fair or relevant)

I apologise for my comparison (which wasn't a comparison) as it was neither fair nor relevant.
