Hey,
basically, i bought the viewsonic 120hz because i got tired of my 60hz LCD (belinea - only the best ofcourse!), which just made gaming hard to find fun because it was unsmooth.
I set up the viewsonic and at 120hz it was even more unsmooth than the 60hz. If you know about UT99 you know the frame rate limiter is fairly poor, at setting a limit of 120hz you can get 115-125FPS each second.. which leaves a lot of room for tearing on such an old game.
I turned on vsync to see if it was the flux in FPS causing the tearing, but when i dodged or did any fast movement, it was still tearing like i had 30fps (just for the fast movement) even with vsync limiting the frames perfectly.
Like another guy on the forum my monitor contracted some vertical lines at 120hz.. which i was actually quite glad about. I thought "well i guess it's not all bad, the monitor clearly is faulty... there is hope yet for smooth gaming on an LCD".
I sent back the viewsonic and ordered the samsung 2233rz.
My pessimism just knew it would be the same tearing problem as the viewsonic (minus some awesome vertical lines everywhere hopefully). And it was.. the exact same unsmoothness, with vsync on or off, whether it be 120hz, 110hz, 100hz, or 60hz where it seems like you can almost count the frames passing you as you move around
Now, i only got these monitors because my UT gaming pals swore by them, saying they had a perfect experience.. it was just like their CRT's they told me. One of them even has the EXACT same rig as me, and he claims it is as smooth as butter.
So, i got the same nvidia driver as him (latest), copied his nvidia control panel settings, fresh installed UT99, used his UT ini's (to have identical settings as him), and STILL the problem is exactly the same... everytime i dodge or jump or practically anything it is unplayably laggy, it just skips frames whenever it wants.
the samsung buttons on the side tell me it is indeed running at 120hz, i have used powerstrip to make sure it is forced at 120hz, and vsync giving me 120.0fps tells me it is running at 120hz... so i personally would conclude UT doesn't like 120hz LCD's, since i have tried two now, and my Q6700/9800GTX should surely be capable of 120hz on UT99.
Sorry for the long story, but i guess i am asking for ideas... i am stuck.
I haven't actually tested another game because i don't have one... but knowing UT99 it is probably just that.. i am wondering if there's any other UT players with 120lcd that claim to have it working.. is it really possible??
I can't really send this one back.. since it doesn't technically have a fault, even if i am unsatisfied with the product.. don't really know my rights.
