So, I recently got hold of an Opeth album having heard about them a lot but never having listened to them before.

I bought Still Life. It is absolutely fantastic in my opinion and I've been really enjoying it since I bought it a couple of months ago.

Question is, I want more, and I was wondering what you think their best album or albums are? If you can bear in mind that I really enjoyed this one, maybe one of their other albums is similar? Or alternatively spec me your favourites so I can keep enjoying this great band.

Thanks very much people!

I suggest you buy Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries next. There's also Damnation which is a very mellow album compared to their normal stuff but it's by no means worse. It's very good, just diferent to what they normally do and shows off what a good voice Mickeal has

Well, you started with my favourite album, But yes, Id go for Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries next.

Id say leave their earlier albums like Orchid and Morningrise till last, personally I find them abit harder to get into, The vocals are a lot more..err raw. But still awesome nonetheless!

Edit! Also, cant go wrong with some live stuff, The Roundhouse Tapes and Lamentations(DVD) are absolutely stunning.

Noooo not this question.

As I've said before, asking someone which Opeth album you should start with [or listen to next] is like asking someone which beer you should drink.

You will ALWAYS get a different answer. Just read the reviews and see what you like the sound of.

Thanks for the replies all! :)

I'll get hold of Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries next I think, followed by the rest of their work :D

Just to confuse you further... My Arms, Your Hearse is an amazing album and is also nearer in sound to Still Life, I'd definitely go for that ahead of Ghost Reveries (which is still great)... so, if only two, get Blackwater Park and MA, YH :)

If I find a band I like, I try to listen to the albums in order, so you can see how the band changes and progresses. I wouldn't even bother with the reviews to be honest, you're just reading another person's opinion on what is a very personal thing for most people.

Start at the beginning and work your way through one at a time.

Just to illustrate this point, my 2 favourites haven't been mentioned at all in this thread yet, Watershed and Morningrise :p

Doh... actually Morningrise has been mentioned, but still...

I can't get into any of their other stuff, but Bleak from Blackwater Park is total awesomeness.

Same here.
The end of BWP (where Michael sings "the sun sets forever over black water park") sets the hairs on my arms on end every time :)

Such a shame their last album (Lotus Eater excluded) was a bit weak.

Anybody going to see them on Monday at Royal Albert Hall? I've got seated tickets which should be interesting, seen them standing before. Apparantly they're playing Blackwater Park all the way through!

I think Still Life is still my favourite having now listened to all the other albums.

Really want to see them live now :D

Damnation would have to be my favourite.

Not always so keen on the growly stuff, but love the music and the 'proper' length songs. Would be nice if they released an instrumentals album of their best music!

Listen to these:

The Moor
Deliverance
Blackwater Park
Bleak
When
The Drapery Falls
Demon of the Fall

I could keep going actually...Just listen to every album and see what you like :)

I love all of Opeth's work and I think you shall too!

As for seeing them live, not much fun standing. Their music is amazing but the last time I saw them in Manchester a few years ago I was more than impatient for it to finish towards the end.

They are a "sit down" band as my friend likes to say. :D
