Creditcard anti-fraud getting over the top?

My sister ordered a Dell laptop last week, the payment was blocked today, hours before delivery (and thus dell delayed it another week), it turns out visa was making sure it wasn't fraud.

I was on holiday recently, essentially mastercard blocked everything I tried to buy. My parents and friends have had similar issues, unless you inform your bank before you go on holiday any purchases will be blocked.

I understand they're trying to save cash, but it's now becoming a chore to remember to inform your bank everytime you might buy something.

yup.. tried to buy a phone from t mobile on offer.. they couldn't get trough the transaction.. so i left without a phone and lost 30quid offer.. :/ won a used phone on ebay 2 days later and payed fine.. the same amount.. its first time this happened tho :)

Seems logical that they would block transaction abroad! Put it this way, i think you would feel more annoyed if in fact your card had been cloned. I always call my bank if i intend to travel abroad.

Try travelling around Indonesia, with a visa card! every 4th transaction with out fail the card gets blocked phone them up wastewr a fiver, card gets reactivated repeat after and rinse after the 4th use of the card! NAtionwide/visa have a lot to answer for when I get back to the UK !

I've had my card nicked/cloned lots of times.

They always give you all the money back immediately.

Bearing that in mind, all the extra security seems like one big pain in the neck to me, with no gain to me.

Pretty sure you are supposed to tell your bank/credit card company that you are going abroad. It's been that way for years.

Makes no difference I told nationwide the EXACT dates of which country I would be in and yet they still blocked the card  automated system in "high risk" areas like Se Asia apprenltly why every 4 th transaction is a total mystery

Just out of curiosity who do you bank with?

I have never had problem with it, but I bank with HSBC. If there was ever a problem they have rung me asking if it was legit or not.

However I do understand your frustration and agree why should you have to inform your bank that you are going away.

Ultimately they have to cover there own ass. It's more preferable from their point of view to have a high false positive rate than to reduce their checks and start missing some fraudulent transactions.

This does get very annoying for us though. I suppose if you are ordering something important its worth calling them first and pre-authorizing it, hell of a lot of hassle though.

The worst thing is when you tell the bank you're going on holiday and they still block the card.

They blocked one of my transaction for a new computer system on OCUK before LOL, had to call them at 2am explaining that it was indeed a valid transaction made by me.

They wouldn't let an order go through on OCUK before but that wasn't as bad as the time they stopped my card for suspected fraud when I was in a petrol station and had just filled up my car!

It is important but perhaps they need to relise their system obviously needs changing if it is so vulnerable and that will inevitably cost money.
