PCI-E V1.0 Backwards Compatible Cards

Hey there.
After trying to install both the Gt220 and Gt240 cards to no avail, both of which have given awful performance on IL2 1946, a 6 year old game of 5FPS i think that my motherboard is not up to date enough to run them? IS this the case?

If so would the Nvidia 9800GT work in a PCI-E V1.0 slot?

Thanks.

what's the rest of your machine's spec? What settings were you playing the game at?

The GT220 is basically an 8600GT equivelant, so I wouldn't expect much from it.

Manufacturer : ASUSTeK Computer Inc
Model: P5GC
Chipset: Intel I i945G
Southbridge: Intel 82801 GB (ICH7/R)
LPCIO: Winbond W83627DHG

That is my motherboard.
Using 2 gig of Corsair RAM
W500 Power supply.

the 945 chipset is pretty old these days, released in 2005. however, I reckon it's a bigger problem as I've never had these problems running IL2:1946 on even older hardware than you. I get solid 30 fps with an E6400 and Radeon 3870 with 2 gigs on a rubbish MSI mobo which runs like a dog on xp. resolution is 1650*1050 on a samsung tv monitor. what cpu are you running again?

Processor
Name: Intel Pentium D820
Codename: Smithfield
Package: Socket 775 LGA

Specification: intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz

Is that enough info?
I used to use an ATI X1300 which ran at about 25FPS which was fine with me.
So why a Gt240 was running it at 5FPS is confusing to me too. Just make sense that maybe my Motherboard was holding it back.

could be, that's an old cpu too...however, I reckon it's something else wrong. have you updated the chipset drivers etc.? what version of windows are you running? I know you've posted it before but a refresh would be nice...

No to first question, i'm not a computer wiz so i'll need that explaining, lol.
Windows XP
yeah
basically took the Gt240 back and got my money back. Then after talking to a good mate who knows that the 9800 will run IL2 fine as he used the same one i was looking to buy from here to run it a while back. I told him of my issue and he says that it could be the PCI bus issue and apparantly the 9800 is backwards compatible, meaning you can d/l different drivers for each bus or something like that?

I had the same problem when my 8800gtx died. ATI's 4xxx series is compatible with pcie 1.0/1.0a mobos. The 8800GT and 8800GTS 512mb definitely aren't compatible (or weren't for me, anyway). I know the GT250 and 9800GT/GTX all use the G92, so it's likely they'll have the same problem. Is there any chance you can beg/borrow/steal your mate's 9800? I think the GTX260 + don't have the issue.

You can't DL different drivers to solve the problem, sadly. IIRC, it's an issue with the mobo design.

yup I'd be inclined to go for a slightly older design...could you not try an older ati card, 3870 or something. 2400 pro, 2600....
actually I reckon an X1800 would be good!

I'm in a similar predicament to the OP, in that i'm trying to track down a GPU that I can use with an ASUS P5GDC deluxe mobo that i've picked up at a car boot. doesn't need to rule the world, just put an image up and cope with xp and word. I'll be watching with interrest so please post if you find a solution, and of course I will also

Just because a motherboard is old does not mean it cannot give good performance. I've had my system for 4+ years and it plays everything I chuck at it with a decent fps.

My DFI-expert motherboard is V1.1 (PCI) although I would not think it makes a great deal of difference (between 1 and 1.1).

I have a 4870 running on mine @ 16x bandwidth. You sure you have not got yours set to something like x2 or x4?
Also, make sure you are running the latest (or most upto date) bios - check the makers website.

Looks like you've gone from an Nvidia to ATI card? You fully uninstalled drivers and put some recent revision ones back on right?
Run a reg cleaner also to see if there are any errors.

I thought All PCI 2.0 VGA cards were backwards compatible?
I run an ATI 5850 on my board and its only PCI 1.1.... think the problem is something else to be honest!

ice Rich. I only learn't how to take the case off my PC a few weeks ago.
Can you please explain.
x2 and x4
bios?
No, i went from ATI to Nvidia. i made sure drivers were clean before installing.

When your computer is booting up there should be an option like "press DEL to enter set-up". (might be a different key but either way it should state what key it is). This will allow you to go into the bios which will allow you to change settings of the computer and motherboard. Don't go mad in here, only change settings you understand first. All will be noted inside the manual.

the 'x2, x4, x8 or x16' relates to the bandwidth transfer between the card and motherboard. Obviously higher is better but there is not much difference between x8 and x16. If it's on something like x2 it will hold back the card though.

The option should be in the bios somewhere and is normally grouped with other video card settings. It will be displayed something like "Bandwidth Transfer link" or similar.

I definately recomend seeing if your bios is upto date first though. I think Asus even have a tool on their site which will download and update your version automatically.
