Great-grandmother is tagged for selling a gold fish

I agree she should be punished in some way, but thats overly harsh. I mean looking at some of the comparisons.

A guy got 4 months tagging and a community order for punching a police officer in the face.

Selling a gold fish to a minor is hardly that sort of crime, and has carried a similar penalty + £1000 fine

Really??? Can't see how a tag actually helps.

because she's been given a curfew?!

gees did you ppls not read the story?

well that and animal cruelty and a willingness to sell animals to ANY buyer regardless of age, legal restrictions etc.

dont get caught up in the article headline, its just an attention grabber. the truth is buried under all the text and images.

The punishment was for selling the Goldfish, you people are just trying to make it seem less ridiculous than it actually is because you can't believe they would do something so stupid.

You can get the same punishment for selling a videogame to someone underage as well.

No, I did read the whole thing. Fish + Cockatiel with a bad eye infection. I don't believe i missed anything else

No, it wasn't just for selling the goldfish.

The pair pleaded guilty at Trafford magistrates court to selling the fish to a person under 16 and for causing unnecessary suffering to a cockatiel by failing to provide appropriate care and treatment

It was for selling to an underage person (which they'd been accused of doing before) and for causing suffering to an animal.

It's clearly not just an isolated incident surrounding one goldfish, however much you might want to buy into the Daily Mail's sensationalism.

Then you take a look at the shop and it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the place. I'd expect Trading Standards had a variety of comments and complaints about the store, as they're not likely to arrange some sort of sting operation for nothing.

come on its not like some hapless granny? it looks like she runs a commercial organisation and should full well know the law.

you cant have one rule for one and one for another.... just because she happens to have had kids who have also had kids who have also had kids does that mean she should not be prosecuted?

Can't really add anything more to that.

wait..you said:

thats a fair point, however the animal cruelty part of prosecution was also factored into the judgement. So whilst it may not be fair to offer that punishment for simply selling the fish, it might be fair to fine someone for selling the fish (after the Girbil incident, which indicates this was not a one off mishap sale) AND mistreating another animal no?

The granny got what she deserved. This sensible verdict should act as a deterrent to other criminally minded pensioners and help to curb Britain's rising tide of illegal goldfish sales.
