G20 police officer cleared of assault

Thanks for the input there. I particularly enjoyed hearing your opinion on this story.

Oh wait, no, just another RSS style thread.

He probaly shouldn't have used his kosh(sp?) but if you're going to get in a police officers face shouting and intimidating him then what do you expect.

I'd be a bit concerned if he didn't get some disciplinary action but don't seem a problem with the ruling. The police should be a figure of authority and people should think twice before ******* with them.

A ******* weapon?. Jesus, at 640x480 I can see that that is a can. I hate to sound like a lefty, but where's the justice?. Police state y0.

I have no issue with what he did - what else did she expect him to do in that situation?

Funny, here in the US you wouldn't dare verbally assault a policeman, not without expecting severe consequences in return.

I think we are losing the plot in the UK and seem to be unable to respect authority.

Good, she deserved it, if you hassle the police and refuse to act civilly after a verbal warning you shouldn't be able to complain when they use more forceful measures.

IKf you think she's, got weapons you don't just back hand and say "go away" in your best Arnie voice (epic though it was) without a second glance.

you generally try to take them off the person/inspect them don't you?

Wrong as it is though I fully support him ¬_¬

But there it looks like the policemen are surrounded on all sides by angry people.

If it was me I'd be bricking it and might lash out just to make sure they keep back, cause if they turn you're ****ed even if they just push forward you risk getting trampled.

I agree that she deserved it. He was just doing his job in dealing with what could have potentially been a bigger situation... she didn't exactly help prancing around in his face like that.

At 640x480 whilst sitting comfortably in front of a screen with a better view of said object, with hindsight and without hundreds of people shouting and pushing you around... Damn right its obvious.

Try making a split decision in the same circumstances he had after a full day of protesting and fending off the idiots (and by idiots I mean NOT the peaceful protestors).

Besides, if you look at the 2 baton strike injuries, please note that they are textbook strikes to the areas of least damage i.e. primary strike zones. If he had "went OTT" then she would have had injury to her joints, groin, neck, solar plexus or head.

Most of the people saying "he went to far" haven't the first idea of what training and under what circumstances police have to use batons. Thankfully the judge and other witnesses know otherwise.

Also, the complainer didnt want to give evidence because

she feared her lifestyle may be raised by the defence
More likely she feared her story would get ripped to shreds in the box

The CPS need a kick up the backside for taking this to court

There's an awful lot of 'just desserts' floating around regarding this topic, but I'm guessing not many of you were there. Neither was I, but I know a lot of people who were. I can't honestly say the police should have backed off, because it seems clear that there were a lot of protesters there who just wanted to cause an uproar, but the procedures they used were excessive, to say the least. People were herded together in a tight crowd and held there for hours, with no access to water or toilets. One girl I know who went along collapsed, a&e believed from the heat and lack of water, and the girls she was with couldn't get her out of the 'pen' for half an hour. The first part of the barrier they approached pushed them back violently, and another of the girls, my old housemate, hit her head on the pavement.

The video they showed doesn't display any context - there's no indication of how long into the protest it took place, or at what stage in the anti-riot procedures employed the event took place. There was the other video released about the same time of another protester being struck with a shield. It seems clear from that tape that the guy was a mouthy little turd, but that doesn't justify a policeman lashing out with, essentially, a weapon when his back was turned. They could have handled it much, much better, and if the copper in question was cleared based on his judgement call of the situation, he neeeds his judgement looked at again.

"Ms Fisher, who did not give evidence at the trial because she feared her lifestyle may be raised by the defence, said she was "disappointed" by the verdict. "

Any chance of you posting your opinion, rather than just copying and pasting like a bot?

You're talking about public servants dude. We shouldn't have to fear the police in the UK. She wasn't swinging a samurai sword about, she was waving a carton of pop and shouting. She looks about 5ft tall and weighs about as much as a packet of fags, is it really necessary to crack her with a trunction?. Christ he could have pushed her over with his middle finger, he's a big guy.

Amazing.

The guy's a brute. Imo brutes have no place in positions of authority.

He should have just admitted that he did it because she was a sanctimonious beatnik who was persistently getting in his face, and generally, on everyone's nerves. I'm sure the court would have agreed. :)

No offence but a 3" blade will kill you just as well as a samuri sword

It's only because of the back hand and Arnie voice really, if he'd just cracked her with the baton i wouldn't care what happened to him

Respect might be quite nice once in a while and the way she seemed* to be in his face showed none. She deserved it in my opinion.

*no I wasn't there and am basing that on the video.

It would, understandably, have been a scary place to be for the public being caught up in it but, unfortunaetly, "kettling" was a sanctioned public order technique at the time and, quite rightly, is now under scrutiny.

Was it a mistake to use "kettling" ??

Probably.... But then hindsight is 20/20 and, because of G20, this technique is being heavily reveiwed AFAIK. Sometimes it unfortunaetly takes a tragedy for chages to be made.
