Well my 12 month contract which was extended a year came to a close today and I'm back on the dole :( but only for 19 days :)
2 years ago I bored everybody to death with my job for about 3 months but I really loved it.
My 'mistake' last November was to make the decision to stop working with kids and grab the opportunity to work with adults in an education setting.
I'd had enough of always being on trial because I was a 50/51 year old bloke working with 14 to 16 year old girls and the funny looks and comments got to me (even little digs on here).
About 2 weeks after I moved offices we had a new big boss who soon wanted to know everybody's contract and what they did every day so we had to fill in time sheets.
It soon became apparent that I wasn't needed in the kids team and I was only filling in the adult team because of somebody on maternity leave - my job was doomed.
My 4 immediate Managers argued my case because of my many extra skills & tasks but the new Manager could only see my contract and what I was paid to do.

Anyway, I was told on Feb 26th (Fri) but by the Tuesday I had been offered 2 jobs and accepted one of them which I've been told by many people is a great opportunity.
This last 2 weeks I was invited by another Manager of a major department to meet her team and to talk over the prospects of a new job being created.
I then went to meet her and right there in the room she rang recruitment and told them to move mountains to get me started (things have to be done correctly).
She then sent me some very confidential 'for my eyes only' files to look at and today she sent me an email saying red tape has to be cut but it's advancing slowly.
I have learned that unless there's something to sign then it's not happening BUT it's looking good.
Sorry I can't give details but if I get it I will be shouting from the rooftops again :)

Why 19 days?
On April 4th I go to Egypt for 15 days so they wouldn't employ me for 1 day.

Oh yeah, I'm not scrounging for 19 days either.

congrats mate really good to hear stories like that people with real skills and proper attitude always are in demand.

Happy for you DM. However, digs on here were probably said because you kept banging on about them being sixteen year old girls. It, for me at least, wasn't that you were working with them, rather that you mentioned it a lot.

However, I'm pleased for you making a success of things. I know you think that I'm one of the ones who are always on your case, but I just speaks as I finds.

Exactly this. I dont think a day went past without him reminding us about the 16 year old girls he worked with :p

Awesome news - it's good to have that holiday with the knowledge you're coming back to start another adventure!

The contract I got before new years got renewed and with a month togo I asked about the plan going forward (I need to know because of the current economic climate). The plan (although they can't start the process until 2 weeks before the end date and it's not certain) is to renew again so fingers crossed.

Nice to hear a good tale instead of the horror stories you hear on the news. I must say something simular happened to me.

I hated my previous job but stuck with it and worked my usual 110% and looked for another job in my free time. Im a part time student and only 20 years old but have plenty of experience in IT as ive worked for a few major companies. In January I was sat down with one of the directors and told to pack up my stuff and go and I will receive a months pay at the end of the month. I asked what was the reason and was told they didnt want to discuss it. My line manager and I sat there in dissmay as none of knew why this had happened. So i said my goodbyes packed up my stuff and went.

The next day I rang the director who had laid me off and explained about references. I then decided to thank him for laying me off as this allowed me to start my new job at the end of the month. His reaction on the phone was priceless. I now started my job at the end of January and have been a lot happier and more well off ever since. The other plus is this new comapny has fully supported me through my current course i hope to graduate this year.

I also got a 3 week gap inbetween this and it was the most fun I had ever had.

Not when you have a duty of care its not.

In relation to a 16 year old, does that make it illegal though, or does it mean that you have acted unethically given your position of authority and trust?

Edit/ Sorry OP don't mean to imply anything or derail the thread.

No problem but it was comments like some of the above that made me decide to get away from kids.
The final straw was when I was giving a lesson on Infection Control and Hand Washing Techniques.
I move down to the Skills Lab that looks like a ward and to demonstrate how easy it is to transfer bacteria, I sit on the edge of a hospital bed and get one of the kids to touch my arm when they have a pretend bacteria cream on their hands.
After the lesson, one of the adults who came with the kids, actually asked me if I thought it was appropriate to let a child touch me on the arm while I was sitting on a bed
Amazingly I made no comment that behind the backs of the children, the 4 female adults were pulling down the trousers on the male clinical mannekin with full parts.
