UFC 111

Really depends how you determine a great fight, if you are GSP that was a great fight, you won without taking any damage.

Really great fights tend to be back and forth battles, which GSP has not had recently because he is to dominant. If he fought someone who could stop his takedowns, or cause him issues with subs from guard im sure it would make for a more interesting fight.

I know it's easy to say, and kinda contradictory considering my BJJ skills compared to GSPs, but he could've had the arm in a different position for more leverage.... there is a video out there that shows GSP backstage after the fight and his BJJ coach showing him that he could've twisted the arm down and across his side (so to speak) ... if he had done that, he could've got more leverage than he was getting by simply having it straight over his groin.

If he had, and really torqued it, his arm would have snapped in half no question.

I think Hardy did really well, I was impressed how little damage he took.
GSP didn't give him any chance to deal damage, it's that kind of control that makes a great fighter. You don't have to break his arm to win.

I honestly think GSP was afraid to break Dan Hardy's arm :o

He has said on numerous occasions he was trying to break his arm with all his might. The most prominent being the post fight interview.

He realised his technique was wrong and that is why Hardy didn't tap, even though it was a good attempt and put hardy in danger, Hardy rolled to the side relieved some of the pressure enabling him to grit his teeth through it until he could pop out.

if i was to do something that didnt work once, maybe id reconsider trying it a second.

by the time it had failed the second time, i think id mix it up by the third.

but anyway

Can anyone tell me how long ago the last Armbar submission, or even Kimura type submission was in the UFC?

im thinking maybe 3 years. One dark part of my mind tells me that GSP knew this and wanted to get that arm bar sub finish to end that run and hopefully be the 'last guy to armbar' someone 3 years from now.

i cannot honestly think of another reason why he would keep doing the same thing over and over?

Last Kimura was at UFC 108 as was the armbar.

So about... 2 months ago.

Last Kimura I can remember is April 18, 2009 by Krzysztof Soszynski I'm pretty sure that was the last one.

Oh yeah UFC 108 Miller vs Lauzon, was like a modified Kimura thing was very smooth :) 2 Jan 2010

In MMA in general armbars are one of the most hit submissions. Part of what I call the ABC's. Rear naked choke, triangle and armbar.

My god what a boring fight, if i wanted to watch a technical fight i'd watch the proper MMA, UFC is a spectator sport at the end of the day, as soon as GSP looses his title he wont be getting any more main events!

I can appreciate GSP did what he had to do but he did not win that fight.
He showed a distinct lack of ground ability, getting someone down and pinned is half a job.

yea if you look at UFC recent history 90% of submissions come from RNC. very few from arm bars, not like the original few UFC with Royce, or one of my fave fighters, Ivan Salverry

i guess the Jan thing this year bucked the trend but before that i think it had been a good while before the last one. i remember reading something about it on sherdog but it could have been before jan.

w-t-h is proper MMA?!

where can i find this?! UFC is about as proper as it gets to be fair. i watch strikeforce, KoTC, BAMMA, Dream (Pride)...UFC is as straight up and legit as any of those if not more so.

RNC is definately the highest hit sub and it's also a safer submission. Getting the back is probably the most dominant position there is, you can finish with a choke or just flatten them out and pound away ala Matt Hughes did to Royce oh so beautifully.

Also people have different variants of flexibility as Hardy showed, doesn't matter who you are a blood choke is putting you to sleep, I always go for chokes rather than joint submissions.

I wouldn't pass up an armbar that was available though:)
