500d

If you're looking for just still photography, then there are probably better preowned options for cheaper, such as the 40D, allowing you to invest more in better lenses.

The 550D is out now, which is an upgrade of the 500D.

18mp and does 1080p video, and considered to be a baby 7D.

It's only a little more expensive but worth the upgrade i think.

Not sure I agree with that. The 500D body can be had for around £510 whereas the 550D will set you back around £650. That's a reasonable price difference for an almost identical camera.

+1,

I agree with Abyss, for stills try a 40D. Can be bought for £400 secondhand and is a much better camera all things considered.

Remember, the lenses are the most crucial part of your photographic journey...

I bought a 500d and found it a cracking camera, I wanted to buy new and I was interested in the HD video. Of course I never used the video! Found it clunky to use (as I do with the 7D) so I'm probably going to keep my camcorder now. If you're happy to go for a second hand body I'd go with the 40d.

You pay for the features you need, the 550D is aimed at entry level videographers and the price difference you pay you get a better range of video capture mode, better sensor, a new metering system and a better screen. By the same token you pay an extra £400-500 for the 7D for an almost identical camera to the 550D but you gain a metal body, faster burst rate and a better AF system.

If you are planning to mainly use the camera for stills and occasional video then 500D is a great camera but if you are after more advanced set of movie modes then you pay the premium for the 550D.

Thanks for all the replys all.
Well I've got £700 to £800 to spend on a camera.

So what is best one for that price?

Thanks.

You've not said what you'll be using it for?

Do you need the video mode?
What type of Photography are you intrestered in?

These two factors will determin on what camera+lens setup will be best in your budget

Sorry.

Well tbh mostly every thing, people, Flowers, landscape, and all other things.
I mostly like closeup shots with micro lens.

I could rely do with 1080p HD movie in.
But if not it fine.

Thanks

Well, if your wanting to photograph a few things like flowers, landscapes and macro then you'll need tonset aside some money for lenses.

So you could use a macro lens- sigma do a 105mm macro that would double up as a nice lens for a bit of portraiture. I think if you shop around the Tamron/Sigma/Tokina macro lenses are about £300 brand new and you can save abut by buying secondhand.

Next you mention landscapes- this can often require every lens it a photographers bag but the most common lens would be a wide-angle. For this try a Tokina 12-24mm, about the same cost again- very high quality.

Finally you might want something long if you want to take pictures of wildlife or sports- for this the 55-250mm canon lens if very good- possibly the best inexpensive lens canon produce. Shop around again and you could be looking about £160.

If you don't want to photograph stuff 'far away' then a general purpose zoom is probably a good idea- the Tamron 17-50mm is a superb lens.

So to summarise:
~100mm Macro
12-24mm
17-50mm OR 55-250mm depending on what you want to shoot.

After that add the zoom that you didn't get (17-50/55-250) and get a 50mm f/1.8 to try lower light photography!

For a camera I would choose a 30D (don't be put off buy the MP- I'm using 8.2 on my camera- not having any problems) and there's a great cost/Price ratio. Otherwise a 450D or 40D.

I got the 500D 8 months ago or so and love it to bits - but would agree that if I was buying new now I would definitely put the extra in and go for a 550D as the features it provides over and above the 500D are worth the premium (in my opinion)!

The external audio input and the 30fps 1080p are a BIG plus if you like your video recording - and the fact it supports the newest SDXC which will allow massive storage potential (not that a 32GB SDHC card would run out of room that quickly!).

Sorry I've not reply for a long time.

I've made my mind up and going for the 500D or 550D. I'm just wondering if any one can show me pictures witch have bin done by by them cameras.

you've got just over a week to buy if you want the canon cashback(need to buy by the 31st), 500d is £30 and 550d is £50.

jessops are doing the 550d with 18-55 kit lens for £749 but at the moment if you use the code CAN550D you get £70, so its £679 then you add the £50 cashback to get £629.
