What about 30''+ or 2560x+ res's?

Alright,

This question has been going round my head for some time now.

Why is the size limit of pc monitors 30''? Why don't we see bigger monitors with higher resolutions?? There is definitely a market for them!

Please do not respond with 'get an lcd tv' because the point is not only about a bigger screen, but an accompanying higher resolution as well.

so, is there any practical limitation to 30'' monitors??


EDIT: Also, don't mention 'get two monitors', that is NOT the point.

The size of PC monitors is not limited to 30". Clicky.

I guess the practical limitations for higher resolutions would be the bandwidth of the connectivity i.e. DVI/HDMI can only carry so much data.

The link that you provided is about LCD monitors with very low resolutions but just big screen size - the equivalent of hooking up a tv to your pc. That is not what I am interested to know.

Interesting that you mention potential limitations of the DVI/HDMI but I (don't know though) can't imagine that this is the limitation for higher resolutions, is it?
 
There are many monitor which fit your bit, this is an example.

However, these are not made in large quantities as the demand is low and the price is VERY high. These types of screens are often used for high-res medical imaging and design work.

I suspect that the majority of the monitor market does not currently need such large size/resolution monitors - however i'm certain that these things will become cheaper to produce and eventually reach a larger audience.

As for limitations to DVI, this is a concern with such high resolutions. Looking on the wikipedia article, DVI-D tops out at 2560×1600@ 60 Hz or 3840×2400@ 33 Hz. Though i'm certain you can use two DVI-D cables to connect a super high-res monitor to a professional grade graphics card. The newer DisplayPort connector has much more bandwidth - so may well solve this problem.

If you google "Quad HD" you will see some more implementations of these high resolutions on upcoming Monitors and TV. Unfortunately, for the mean time they will cost as much as a nice car.
 
excellent, that's what I was looking for.

however - yeah - the price is prohibitive.

perhaps soon we can get them in eyefinity setups (not).

hopefully, as you suggested, now with the dport we might start seeing bigger monitors with higher resolutions coming into the market at an affordable price.
