Here's one for you...

Bristol operates a Park & Ride scheme, and a shuttle bus that runs between the car park site just outside Bristol into the centre.

Signage around the car park says that the car park is free, and that you pay for the bus.

I've checked the FAQs on the council website, and can't find anything against this, but I've seen someone park up in the Park & Ride with their bike in the boot. They then ride their bike into the centre from the Park & Ride site.

I know parking in this place is at the council's discretion, but do you think you'd be able to regularly get away with this?

I can't see any circumstances where people might stop others from parking in this site, because there will never be a massive amount of cyclists parking and then cycling in. People are too lazy, and it's not a walkable distance either.

What do you think? I don't really want to ring the council because I don't want to alert them to this guy who's clearly doing a great job of getting away with it. There is security on-site, but I've never seen them leave their little building in the middle of a massive car park.

Cheers,

Karl.

what do you mean getting away with it? he's parking out of town and getting in by non-car means, that's exactly the purpose of the scheme. I can't see that they'd ever bat an eyelid about it

Sounds like a good idea to be to be honest. Can't see why you would fail to get away with it. The car park is free after all. If you say there's no strict "only park here if you're paying for the bus" notices displayed then there's nothing wrong with it.

I'd really appreciate that Sara!

I can't see anything wrong with it either. Just canvassing public opinion I suppose. I know that if it turned out that loads of people did it and the car park was full of people that couldn't get the bus, it'd be outlawed, but this isn't happening as far as I could see?

I very much doubt it would, the busses are just a dedicated route, they're not there to fund the car park.

bristolswing @CllrJonRogers A friend wishes to check if it's OK to use the free Park'n'Ride car park BUT not the buses, instead riding in on a bicycle?

Check for his reply on http://twitter.com/CllrJonRogers in case he takes his time replying and I miss it, I should be queuing for a bus to the airport at 2pm :)

Thanks Sara! I'll keep an eye out. :)

I suppose my main fear is of jobsworths deciding that it's not allowed in some way. Finding out may be of benefit to quite a few other people!

I can't see a problem with it, after all the aim of the scheme is to reduce city centre traffic and not to make money. If it was banned then people would just find somewhere else nearby to park such as a residential street and still cycle in.

OMG! Call the cops!

A very helpful reply from the true renegade that you are.

I've had a look on wikipedia, and apparently larger park & rides have shower facilities, bike rental and other bonuses. I guess it's just at the discretion of any particular council how you treat it. Fingers crossed! I might be able to use the bike to work scheme and save up to £28 per fortnight for a bus ticket!
