Whats the difference between a Netgear DG834N and a DG834G? obviously the speed of the wireless (N and G) but which is better? everyone used to recommend the DG834G as the gaming router of choice but is newer better?

I previously had a DG834, just the basic one, but for nearly a year now ive been stuck using the crappy supplied BEBox (speedtouch 780) and so bought a DG834N which should arrive tomorrow, was this a bad choice? just worried ive wasted nearly £50

EDIT: WHAT THE HELL AM I ON, i read the email twice and thought it said N, it is actually the G one i've bought, im just being a complete plank, ignore this it's been a long week

I have had nothing but trouble with my N since the day I bought it, and its not just my unit. I have a few friends with the same router and they have similar or the same issues.

Replaced it with a G and have not had ANY trouble since. Using the DGTeam firmware it really is superb.

Previously when i had the standard DG834v3 i briefly tried the DGteam firmware and it seemed really really dodgy for me, are there any good guides to setting it up and making it perfectly stable and the best possible for connection stability?

I assume it'll be a DG834v5 that arrives and they don't appear to have a firmware for the v5 on their site

Mrbios, apparently the DG834v5 is a completely different kettle of fish compared to the others, as in different insides ect ect. netgear just made the model look similar.

When you say a different kettle of fish, are they bad evil fish? or still good fish taht don't like change (code not as easy to modify?)

When I tried a DG834G v5 I lost 1300kbps off my connection sync on ADSL Max, probably due to the Conextant chipset. The router also suffered wireless problems using the wi-fi on/off button. That made it unable to connect wirelessly after a few on/off unless I restarted router.

I don't know if things have improved now, as I purchase the v5 during the early days. But firmware 6.00.21 and 6.00.25 made no difference. could have just been a duff unit.

Well i probably won't use the wifi on/off button, i do appear to be syncing slightly slower than what the speedtouch one did, but the main factor for me is stability so i'll see how that goes over the next few days
