oh hai.

Going to be looking at a new latop in the near future.

It needs the following:

- 13 inch screen
- 8-12 hours battery life in the real world
- Backlit keyboard
- Matt screen, non-glossy so I can use it outside.
- Chiklet keyboard

I was thinking the CULV platform maybe best but dunno much about laptops.

Acer Timeline 8371, fits 3 out of 5...

Has ~4.5-5hr battery life when running on intel graphics, and who actually needs to look at their keyboard to type anyway?

But the only laptops which I know of which have 8-12hr life, are Asus ULX0 series ones, which have a gloss screen, and non-backlit, but are available in 13". So up to you.

They're essentially normal PCs these days, just install teh lunix or win7 on it and it'll run fine. I didn't get a MB(p) because I didn't fancy forking out double what I paid for my acer for essentially the same thing. :)

yeh true. The asus is only £350 at CPW, seems cheap and has 8 hour battery life. Back-lit keyboard would have been nice so would the matte screen, but don't wanna pay more money for it. hhmmm

gah.

The only one I can think of that ticks almost all is the Macbook pro, but I hate OSX :/

It only gets 3 out of 5, no matte display on the 13" and you won't get 8 hour battery life in the real world. Maybe 4-5.

There's the Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ, the only thing it's missing is a backlit keyboard I think. Comes in at £400-600 depending on spec.

Yeah, I'd happily have the Asus. But it only fits 3 of your 5 criteria, I would definitely try and get to a shop to play with it first.

Exactly so why would I want to pay double the price of a PC laptop?

Point me too a £350 laptop that has 8hr+ battery life and has similar specs to a macbook. Im struggling find one.

I hear what you are saying though :)

Thats the thing, I don't need a lot of cpu power. I only use Office, firefox, e-mail on my laptop. I just want a matte screen, insane battery life, backlit keyboard.

I'll keep searching or find a proper laptop forum for some advise, theres just so many laptops lol!

The Asus UL30 from carphone warehouse is meant to have a 12hr battery with it and seems to be the case from people replying on the hotukdeals website. [720mins=12hrs as per website info]....

Alternative is the Asus UL80Vt from PC World, 14" screen, dvd writer, 11.5hr battery life, dual GPU if you want gaming it has a G210 gpu otherwise the standard 45000HD accelerator to conserve battery power. Currently £550 but 5% voucher code currently brings it down to £530.... Am tempted by that myself.

The Dell E4300 fits all those criteria but is a professional machine and comes with a price tag to match, even the extended battery on mine does 7 ish hours pretty easily but there's an additional battery slice you can buy which will take it up to 12 hours or so.

upcoming Asus PL30JT fits all the criterias. God knows when they will actually be available. Supposedly in May.

There is one available, without the fancy stuff, called the UL30. It's sort of similar to the Acer, with great battery life. Can't remember if it is glossy or mate though.

Dell inspiron 13z with 8-cell battery is supposed to do eleven and a half hours, keyboard isn't blacklit and screen is probably glossy though :(

still, build quality will be better than the Acer timeline and the price is far shy of the macbook pro (which is also rather heavy in my experience, kind of defeating the point)
