Not Necessarily the fastest, most expensive etc, what do you think the best Porsche is. For those who have driven one, owned one, input your err, input ?

I havent driven one yet unfortunatly, but for me I would love to, eventually, own a 996 Carrera 4s.

I think the turbocharged ones are nice but they get in the way of the lovely sounding flat 6 (turbochargers work as silencers exhaust wise). Plus 175mph is fast enough really?!

Carrera GT obviously :D Most expensive innit. I would probably take the 997 GT3 as a good combination of being fairly respectable day in day out yet supple enough to take on a back road and be awesome on track too. I've only ever driven my dads 996 which was brilliant enough as it was so for the other models if they're better they must all be brilliant drivers cars.

Early 911S with the shorter wheelbase. I like my Porsches to try and kill me at every bend in the road.

I would say 911R, but given that only 20 were made....

I always wonder why people try and insist that a true porsche has to be aircooled; it doesn't make any sense. Especially as the 996 and 997 are both reputedly much better cars.

Because it's an arbitrary cut-off point? I'd guess it's primarily because you can trace a fairly unchanged formula through the 911 lineage up to the point where watercooling was introduced but that is only a guess.

I've never driven one but I love the look of the 1973 911 Carerra 2.7 RS and if the handling in games is to be believed (it's probably not), offers a great combination of fun and car that will take you off at the first bend if you disrespect it.

Porsche 993, last true Porsche....

absolute balderdash

That sort of myth is touted by beardy boffin types who dont actually drive their cars. What difference does it make if its air cooled or water cooled really ?

For me, the absolute best of the breed has to be the current GT3. People said that porsche couldnt make the the Gen 1 997 GT3 any better, how wrong were they as porsche just pushed the envelope even further

The 993 was very very sexy but now the new ones have the round lights again I am quite partial to a 911 Turbo S. GT3 etc are nice but this is the ultimate combo of speed and style and comfort. 991 turboS would tare it a new one and be more comfortable. :D

There didn't appear to be any restrictions on the question, so I might aswell be a bit more ambitious, 917 30:

I was stood in WHSmith a few days ago and two guys were slating the Boxster that was on the cover of some magazine. The usual "hairdressers car", "slow", "crap handling" comments etc.
Then one of them picked it up and started reading the article.
"Whoa, 5.3 to 60", "170mph top speed", "mid engine handling", "I didn't realise that" were some of the comments he made. Then him and his mate suddenly started waxing lyrical about how amazing the Boxster must be and that they didn't realise that it was so good.

I just picked up my copy of Modern Mini and smiled to myself.

Anway, for me the best Porsche would be either the new GT3 or 911 turbo, as much as I hear people say that the 993 was amazing, times have moved on, quite significantly so stop living in the past and embrace just how good modern cars can be.

For me its the 911 without a doubt...especially the turbo version but other than the turbo i do like the GT3 series especially the 997 GT3 RS...just the thought of that car makes me do sex wee's in my pants :p
